Marseille XIII Avenir
Marseille XIII Avenir are a French Rugby league club based in Marseille, Bouches-du-Rhône in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. The club plays in the French National Division 2. The club was founded in 1946 and then re-founded in 2007. It plays its matches at the Stade Roger Couderc. In addition to the open age team, the club also has a women's team and a thriving junior section. History Marseille XIII Marseille XIII were formed in 1946 on the restart of Rugby League after its banning by the French Vichy Government during the Second World War. By the end of the 1950s they had played in four French Rugby League Championship finals and contested four Lord Derby Cup finals. They won their first trophy in Season 1947/48, when they reached the final of the cup and beat favourites AS Carcassonne 5–4. Stade (), officially the Hanseatic City of Stade (german: Hansestadt Stade, nds, Hansestadt Stood) is a city in Lower Saxony in northern Germany. First mentioned in records in 934, it is the seat of the Stade (district), district () which bears its name. Jacky Merquey
Jacques Merquey (born 26 September 1929) also known by the nickname of "Jackiew", as a French rugby footballer of the 1950s. A dual-code rugby international, his position was , later in his career this changed to . While Merquey started in union, he played the vast majority of his career in rugby league. He played his club rugby league for Marseille, Sporting Olympique Avignon XIII and Lezignan, becoming the most capped International, with 37 games for France. Merquey is the only Frenchman to play in the first three successive World Cups, in 1954, 1957 and 1960. Merquey originally played rugby union, where he also represented France, in a total of four games against England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland in 1950. Younes Khattabi (born 28 March 1984) is a Moroccan rugby league footballer who plays as a or for US Entraigues XIII in the Elite Two Championship. He previously played for SO Avignon and the Catalans Dragons in the Super League. He is notable for scoring the first try for the Catalans Dragons in the 2007 Challenge Cup Final against St. Helens, thus becoming the first Muslim to score a try at Wembley Stadium. Jean Dop (1924–2003) was a French professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1950s. A France international representative , he played club football for Marseille XIII. National Division 1
The National Division 1 is the third tier of rugby league in France, below the Elite Two Championship and above the National Division 2. The season runs from September to April. From season 2012–13 the league was split into regions ''East'' and ''West'', each team plays each other in their regional league home and away with the top sides then meeting in a series of play-off matches resulting in a Grand Final. The winner can be promoted to ''Elite Two'' subject to having adequate finances and facilities. Occasionally if the winners aren't able to be promoted, or opt out, then the team finishing second could be promoted. History The league was first played for in 1949-50 under the title 2nd Division.
