Marr College
Marr College is a co-educational secondary school in Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland. Marr College is the third largest secondary school in South Ayrshire, with 1,127 pupils enrolled at the school in 2023–2024. The building itself is owned by the Marr Trust and the running, maintenance and operations of the school is managed by South Ayrshire Council. The school was gifted to the town of Troon by Charles Kerr Marr. The school transferred from Marr Educational Trust to the Strathclyde Regional Council after the trust lost its anomalous direct-grant status in 1978. When the Strathclyde Regional Council was abolished and replaced by South Ayrshire Council in 1996, South Ayrshire Council became solely responsible for the school's educational provision. Throughout 2016-2017, it underwent extensive restoration, including a new building extending from the original school building. Gordon Burns (footballer)
Gordon Burns (born 2 December 1978) is a Scottish former professional footballer who played in the Scottish First Division for Ayr United. Playing career Burns began his footballing career with local boys club Troon Thistle, and also spent time playing with Prestwick Boys Club & Coylton Boys Club, before joining Ayr United Boys Club. He was scouted by several senior teams and trained with Motherwell, Dundee United, Hearts and Celtic before deciding to sign 'S' forms with Ayr United under Manager George Burley. He left Marr College at 16 to sign a 2-year YTS contract at Somerset Park with Manager Simon Stainrod, before signing his first professional contract at Ayr United at the age of 18. Brian Whittle
Brian Ian Whittle (born 26 April 1964) is a Scottish politician and former athlete, who has been a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the South Scotland region since 2016. A member of the Scottish Conservatives, he serves as Shadow Minister for Environment, Biodiversity and Land Reform. Whittle won the gold medal in the 4 × 400 metres relay at both the 1986 European Athletics Championships and 1994 European Athletics Championships. He also competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Early life Whittle was born in 1964 growing up in the Scottish town of Troon. His father was a sprinter until his late teens. Tom Walsh (footballer)
Tom Walsh (born 11 July 1996) is a Scottish footballer who most recently played for Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Championship. He became the youngest player to make an appearance for Rangers in Scottish league football, when he played for them aged 16 in 2012. He also had loan spells with Stenhousemuir, Dumbarton and St Mirren during his Ibrox career. Since leaving Rangers, Walsh has had spells with Limerick in the League of Ireland and Dumbarton. Michael Russell (Scottish Politician)
Michael William Russell (born 9 August 1953) is a Scottish politician serving as Chairman of the Scottish Land Commission since 2024, having previously served in the Scottish Cabinet under Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon. A member of the Scottish National Party (SNP), he was the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Argyll and Bute from 2011 to 2021, and a list MSP for South of Scotland from 1999 to 2003 and 2007 to 2011. Russell previously worked as a television producer and director and the author of seven books. Steve Nicol
Stephen Nicol (born 11 December 1961) is a Scottish retired professional footballer who mainly played as a right back and occasionally played in other positions across defence and midfield. He played for the successful Liverpool teams of the 1980s. He was also a regular member of the Scotland national team and represented his country at the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Nicol started his playing career with local club Ayr United, moving to Liverpool in 1981. He won five English league championships, three FA Cup winners medals, and the 1984 European Cup during 14 years with Liverpool. Nicol played for several other English teams after leaving Liverpool, including Notts County, Sheffield Wednesday and Doncaster Rovers, before emigrating to the United States in 1999. Jamie Ness
Jamie Ness (born 2 March 1991) is a Scottish former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. Ness began his career with Rangers and made his debut for the first team in January 2011. He then scored against Celtic in the Scottish Cup but his progress was hampered by injuries. In 2012, he became a free agent and joined Stoke City. He failed to make an impression with Stoke and spent time out on loan with Leyton Orient and Crewe Alexandra. Ness joined Scunthorpe United in July 2015 on a free transfer. Neil Murray (footballer)
Neil Andrew Murray (born 21 February 1973 in Bellshill) is a Scottish former footballer. He began his career with Rangers in the early 1990s, and also played for clubs in Switzerland, France, Germany and England. He represented the Scotland Under-21 national team. Early life Murray was educated at Marr College in Troon, South Ayrshire. Career Playing Murray began his career with Rangers, where he won the domestic treble in 1992/93. He left Rangers in 1996, joining Swiss club Sion and winning the Swiss League and Cup double before moving to Lorient in France a year later. Tom Morton
Thomas Morton (born 1955) is a Scottish broadcaster, journalist and author. He lives and works mainly in the Shetland Islands. Life Morton was born in 1955, and moved to Shetland in 1987, three years after his wife, Susan, who was a General Practitioner (GP). Rory William McKenzie (born 7 October 1993) is a Scottish footballer who plays as a midfielder for club Kilmarnock. Donald Jack
Donald Lamont Jack (6 December 1924 – 2 June 2003) was an English and Canadian novelist and playwright. Life Jack was born in Radcliffe, Bury, England and grew up in Britain, attending the well regarded Bury Grammar School and Marr College and later serving in the RAF in World War II (1943–47). After the war he emigrated to Canada in 1951, and became a Canadian citizen in 1964. From 1955 to 1957 he was a scriptwriter for Crawley Films. After 1957 he became a full-time freelance writer.
