Marong, Victoria
Marong is a town in Victoria, Australia. At the , Marong and the surrounding area had a population of 2,005. It is to the west of Bendigo. Its local government area is the City of Greater Bendigo. The town is at the junction of the Calder Highway (A79) and the Calder Alternate Highway (A790). History The name "Marong" is derived from a Djadjawurrung word for the Murray River Pine. The post office opened on 1 January 1860. The first local government authority for Marong was the Marong Road District (an early form of single-purpose local government), which was proclaimed on 19 August 1860. Its boundary was altered twice in 1862 and on 12 December 1864 it was redesignated as a shire. It absorbed Raywood Borough in 1915, and was proclaimed a Rural City in 1990. Bendigo West is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Victoria. It is a electorate, centred on the city of Bendigo west of the Yungera railway line, and includes surrounding rural towns to the west and south-west. It encompasses the localities of Bendigo City, California Gully, Castlemaine, Harcourt, Long Gully, Maldon, Marong, Newstead and West Bendigo. Calder Highway is a rural highway in Australia, linking Mildura and the Victoria/New South Wales border to Bendigo, in North Central Victoria.
