Marnix Gymnasium
The Marnix, het Rotterdamse Gymnasium is a school located in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The school is named after Philips of Marnix, lord of Saint-Aldegonde. It teaches secondary education in the Netherlands and prepares students for a tertiary education at Dutch universities. History The school was founded in 1903. Its naming after the Calvinist Philips of Marnix was done out of deliberate jealousy of the name of the Gymnasium Erasmianum, which is named after the far more famous humanist Desiderius Erasmus. After the Second World War the then deputy head of the school, Jan Karsemeijer, had to go into hiding from the authorities. He had published an article on the teaching of literature that was openly applauding Nazi thought. School has moved twice in its history. First in 1927, and a third time some three decades ago. It is currently located near Diergaarde Blijdorp. In 2003 the school celebrated its last centennial. These celebrations included a speech by Maria van der H ...

HNLMS Marnix
HMS ''Garland'', also known by her Polish designation ORP ''Garland'', was a G-class destroyer built for the Royal Navy in the mid-1930s. During the Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939 the ship spent considerable time in Spanish waters, enforcing the arms blockade imposed by Britain and France on both sides of the conflict. Shortly after World War II began, she was badly damaged by the premature explosion of her own depth charges and required over six months of repairs. Before these were completed, ''Garland'' was loaned to the Polish Navy in May 1940. The ship was assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet afterwards and escorted convoys there before being assigned to the Western Approaches Command in September for escort duties. She escorted a convoy from Gibraltar to Malta during Operation Halberd in September 1941 and escorted Convoy PQ 16 from Iceland to Murmansk in May 1942. She was badly damaged by a near miss from a German bomber during that operation and required three m ...

Bornem Castle is situated at an elevation of 1 meters. History The building stands on the Oude Schelde, a tributary of the Scheldt. The earliest fortification on the site was of the 10th or 11th centuries and was intended to defend against the incursions of the Vikings. A manor house was built on the foundations of the older building in 1587 by the Spanish nobleman Pedro Coloma, Baron of Bornhem and lord of Bobadilla, a follower of Alexander Farnese. The property was afterwards leased by the family de Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde, who became the outright owners in 1773. The present house was built on the same site at the end of the 19th century to plans by Hendrik Beyaert, after the remains of the 16th-century building had been demolished. It remains in ownership of the house ...
