Marilú (singer)
Marina Herrera Aragón (18 July 1927 – 16 February 2023), known as Marilú or "La Muñequita que Canta" (The Little Doll that Sings), was a Mexican singer and actress. She began her career in 1939. At the time of her death she was one of the last stars from the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. Background Marilú was born in Cárdenas, San Luis Potosí, Mexico. After her father's death, the family moved to Tampico, Tamaulipas, where Marilú won a singing contest and joined the troupe of a comedian named Don Catarino. In November 1940 she joined Paco Miller's troupe, which later toured Mexican states. In Mexico City, Marilú became an XEW radio performer and appeared in her first film, '' La liga de las canciones'' (1941). She also sang at the Teatro Lírico and the Teatro Follies. Bolero Singers
Bolero is a genre of song which originated in eastern Cuba in the late 19th century as part of the trova tradition. Unrelated to the older Spanish dance of the same name, bolero is characterized by sophisticated lyrics dealing with love. It has been called the "quintessential Latin American romantic song of the twentieth century". Unlike the simpler, thematically diverse ''canción'', bolero did not stem directly from the European lyrical tradition, which included Italian opera and canzone, popular in urban centers like Havana at the time. Instead, it was born as a form of romantic folk poetry cultivated by a new breed of troubadour from Santiago de Cuba, the ''trovadores''. Pepe Sánchez is considered the father of this movement and the author of the first bolero, "Tristezas", written in 1883. Life Early life Gonzalo Curiel was born in Guadalajara, Mexico to Juan N. Curiel and María de Jesús Barba Riestra. Curiel had 2 siblings, Juan Luis Curiel Barba, and María Elisa Curiel Barba. Curiel learned many instruments at a young age, was taught piano at 6, and learned guitar and the violin. However, after a 5-year stay in Los Angeles to escape the Mexican Revolution from 1917 to 1922 while studying music under Zez Confrey, Curiel unwillingly studied in medicine due to the pressure of his father, but by 1927 Curiel had stopped studying medicine to start a career as a pianist.
