Marie Hjelmer
Fanny Marie Annette Hjelmer born Raaschou (1869–1937) was a Danish women's rights activist and politician. In 1918, she became one of the first five women to be elected to the Landsting. She joined the Danish Women's Society in 1922, became a board member in 1925 and served as president from 1931 to 1936. Biography Born on 20 April 1869 in Bjerring, Fanny Marie Annette Raaschou was the daughter of Niels Peter Raaschou (1823–1890), a parish priest, and Fanny Eline Annette Grundtvig (1841–1879). She was brought up in her father's rectory, first in Bjerringbroegnen and later in Espe near Ringe on the island of Funen. As the oldest child, on her mother's death in 1879, she had to take care of her five siblings from the age of 10. After qualifying as a teacher at Marie Kruse's School in Copenhagen, she went on to study French in Paris (1894). Ringsted
Ringsted is a city located centrally in the Danish island of Zealand. It is the seat of a municipality of the same name. Ringsted is situated approximately from Copenhagen. History Ringsted was the site of ''Sjællands Landsting'' (lit. ''Zealand's county thing'') during the Middle Ages, which in 1584 moved to St. Bendt's church and became known as ''Sjællandsfar Landsting''. In 1805 it moved to Copenhagen and was renamed Østre Landsret, and is still active under this name. In 1131, Canute Lavard was killed in Haraldsted forest, leading to outbreaks of civil war. The church was consecrated in 1170. In front of the church is the spacious town square leading to the shopping streets with shops and boutiques. The town arms goes back to 1421. ''Kvinden & Samfundet'' (''Woman & Society'') is a Danish feminist magazine and the official publication of the Danish Women's Society. It has been published since 1885. History The Danish Women's Society was founded in 1871 by Matilde Bajer and her husband Fredrik Bajer and the society's official magazine, ''Kvinden & Samfundet'', was established in 1885. Its first editor, Elisabeth Grundtvig, headed the magazine from 1885 to 1886. Edel Saunte
Edel Saunte (13 March 1904 in Næstved – 22 November 1991 in Helsingør) was a Danish jurist, social democratic politician and women's rights activist. Saunte received her law degree from the University of Copenhagen in 1925. In 1934 she became a barrister of the High Court (''landsretssagfører''), the third woman to do so. In summer 1944 during the German occupation she participated in the organization of the food distribution in Copenhagen. Saunte was an unsuccessful candidate for the Social Democrats in the first election after World War II, held on 31 October 1945. The following day the resistance newspaper ''Information'' described her as competent and blamed her failed candidacy on the undemocratic election procedure within her party. Saunte was interviewed, but declined to comment on the social democratic election procedure.
