Margrét Frímannsdóttir
Margrét Frímannsdóttir (born 29 May 1954) is an Icelandic former politician and party leader. A member of the Althing between 1987 and 2007, she first represented the People's Alliance and later the Social Democratic Alliance (SDA). Biography Frímannsdóttir graduated in statistics from Selfoss School of Computer Science and for a time studied at Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurlands. She worked as a shop assistant, teacher at the Stokkseyri Primary School and as head of Stokkseyri district (1982–1990). Frímannsdóttir was first elected to the Althing for the People's Alliance in the Southern constituency in 1987. From 1999 she was part of the Social Democratic Alliance, serving in the parliament until 2007. She served as chair of the parliamentary caucus of the People's Alliance (1988–1992) and leader of the party (1995–1999). Althing
The (; ), anglicised as Althingi or Althing, is the Parliamentary sovereignty, supreme Parliament, national parliament of Iceland. It is the oldest surviving parliament in the world. The Althing was founded in 930 at ('Thing (assembly), thing fields' or 'assembly fields'), about east of what later became the country's capital, Reykjavík. After Iceland's union with Norway in 1262, the Althing lost its legislative power, which was not restored until 1904 when Iceland gained home rule from Denmark. For 641 years, the Althing did not serve as the parliament of Iceland; ultimate power rested with the Norwegian, and subsequently the Danish throne. People's Alliance (Iceland)
The People's Alliance () was an electoral alliance in Iceland from 1956 to 1968 and a socialist political party from 1968 to 1998. History In 1916, the Social Democratic Party (''Alþýðuflokkurinn'') was formed in Iceland. In 1930 the party split, leading to the formation of the Communist Party of Iceland (''Kommúnistaflokkur Íslands''), recognised as the Icelandic section of the Communist International. In 1937 the social democrats suffered another split, and the splinter group unified itself with the communists forming the Socialist Party (''Sósíalistaflokkurinn''). Selfoss (town)
Selfoss () is a town in southern Iceland on the banks of the Ölfusá river. It is the seat of the municipality of Árborg. The Icelandic Route 1 (Iceland), Route 1 runs through the town on its way between Hveragerði and Hella, Iceland, Hella. The town is a centre of commerce and small industries with a population of around 10,000 (2023), making it the largest residential area in South Iceland. Stokkseyri () is a small in Southern Iceland, with a population of around 445. Overview Founded around 900 AD by the settler Hásteinn Atlason, it was an important fishing and trading village in previous times. The town is founded on the Great Þjórsá lava. Southern () was one of the multi-member constituencies of the Althing, the national legislature of Iceland. The constituency was established in 1959 following the nationwide extension of proportional representation for elections to the Althing. It was abolished in 2003 following the re-organisation of constituencies across Iceland when it was merged with the municipalities of Gerðahreppur, Grindavík, Reykjanesbær, Sandgerði and Vatnsleysustrandarhreppur from the Reykjanes constituency and the municipality of Sveitarfélagið Hornafjörður from the Eastern constituency to form the South constituency. Litla-Hraun
Litla-Hraun (, "Little Lava") is the largest prison in Iceland. Located just outside Eyrarbakki, it consists of nine buildings inside a high-security fence. Litla-Hraun was founded on March 8, 1929, as a single building. Inside the fence is a soccer, football field as well as some basketball facilities.
