Marcy (CDP), New York
Marcy is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Marcy, Oneida County, New York, United States. It was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census. The CDP is in eastern Oneida County, in the southern part of the town of Marcy. It is northwest of Utica and southeast of Rome. The hamlet of Maynard is in the eastern part of the CDP. Interstate 90, the New York Thruway, passes through Marcy, but with no direct access. New York State Route 49, the Utica–Rome Expressway, runs the length of the community, with access from one exit in the center of the CDP, as well as exits at the eastern and western ends of the CDP. The Erie Canal forms the southern border of the community. A census-designated place (CDP) is a concentration of population defined by the United States Census Bureau for statistical purposes only. CDPs have been used in each decennial census since 1980 as the counterparts of incorporated places, such as self-governing cities, towns, and villages, for the purposes of gathering and correlating statistical data. CDPs are populated areas that generally include one officially designated but currently unincorporated community, for which the CDP is named, plus surrounding inhabited countryside of varying dimensions and, occasionally, other, smaller unincorporated communities as well. CDPs include small rural communities, edge cities, colonias located along the Mexico–United States border, and unincorporated resort and retirement communities and their environs. Erie Canal
The Erie Canal is a historic canal in upstate New York that runs east-west between the Hudson River and Lake Erie. Completed in 1825, the canal was the first navigable waterway connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes, vastly reducing the costs of transporting people and goods across the Appalachians. In effect, the canal accelerated the settlement of the Great Lakes region, the westward expansion of the United States, and the economic ascendancy of New York State. Utica–Rome Expressway
New York State Route 49 (NY 49) is an east–west state highway in central New York in the United States. It runs for just over from an intersection with NY 3 in the town of Volney (east of Fulton) in Oswego County, New York to an interchange with Interstate 790 (I-790), NY 5, NY 8 and NY 12 in the city of Utica in Oneida County. The route follows a generally northwest–southeast alignment between the two points, passing along the north shore of Oneida Lake and directly serving the city of Rome. As NY 49 heads east, it connects to several highways of regional importance, such as I-81 in the village of Central Square and NY 13 in the town of Vienna.
