Marathon
The marathon is a long-distance foot race with a distance of kilometres ( 26 mi 385 yd), usually run as a road race, but the distance can be covered on trail routes. The marathon can be completed by running or with a run/walk strategy. There are also wheelchair divisions. More than 800 marathons are held worldwide each year, with the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes, as larger marathons can have tens of thousands of participants. A creation of the French philologist Michel Bréal inspired by a story from Ancient Greece, the marathon was one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896 in Athens. The distance did not become standardized until 1921. The distance is also included in the World Athletics Championships, which began in 1983. It is the only running road race included in both championship competitions (walking races on the roads are also contested in both). Tamirat Tola Abera (born 11 August 1991) is an Ethiopian Olympic and world champion long-distance runner. Hailing from the regional state of Oromia, he competes in track, road and cross country events. He won gold medal in the marathon at the 2024 Summer Olympics, setting an Olympic record, and the bronze medal in the 10,000 metres at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He competed in the marathon at the 2017 and 2022 World Athletics Championships, earning silver and gold, respectively, and setting a championship record at the 2022 competition. He finished third at both the 2021 Tokyo and 2023 London marathons and won the 2023 New York City Marathon, breaking the course record. Ruth Chepng'etich (often spelled Ruth Chepngetich, born 8 August 1994) is a Kenyan road runner who is the current women's world record holder in the marathon, with a time of 2:09:56 set at the 2024 Chicago Marathon. She is the 2019 world champion in the marathon, and is a three time winner of the Chicago Marathon, having won in 2021, 2022 and 2024, where she set the world record. Chepng'etich is the first woman to break the 2:11 and 2:10 barriers in the marathon, and also holds the sixth-fastest women's mark of all time for the half marathon, at 1 hour 4 minutes and 2 seconds which was at lstanbul Half-Marathon. Kelvin Kiptum Cheruiyot (2 December 1999 – 11 February 2024) was a Kenyan long-distance runner who currently holds the marathon world record. , he holds three of the seven fastest marathons in history, and was ranked first among the world's men's marathon runners at the time of his death. Tigst Assefa Tessema (; Oromo: Tigist Asaffaa Tasammaa; born 3 December 1996) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner and the former world record holder in the women's marathon. She has won three top-tier World Marathon Majors, two in Berlin and one in London. A former 800 meters specialist, Tigst switched to road races in 2018 and ran her first marathon in 2022. At the age of 16, she won the bronze medal in the 800 meters at the 2013 African Junior Championships. She finished fourth at the senior African Championships the following year, and then represented Ethiopia in the event at the 2016 Rio Olympics aged 19. Sifan Hassan (; born January 1993 in Ethiopia) is a Dutch middle- and long-distance runner. She is most recognized for her versatility in running championship and world-leading performances in widely disparate distances. She completed an unprecedented triple at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, winning gold medals in both the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres and a bronze medal for the 1,500 metres. Gotytom Gebreslase
Gotytom Gebreslase (born 15 January 1995) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. She won the gold medal in the marathon at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. In 2021, in her marathon debut, Gebreslase took victory in the women's race at the Berlin Marathon in Germany. She ran in the delayed 2021 Tokyo Marathon and finished third in a time of 2:18:18. She also placed third at the 2022 New York City Marathon. Phidippides
Pheidippides (, , ) or Philippides () is the central figure in the story that inspired the marathon race. Pheidippides is said to have run from Marathon to Athens to deliver news of the victory of the Battle of Marathon, and, according to Herodotus, to have run from Athens to Sparta. This latter feat also inspired two ultramarathon races, the Spartathlon and Authentic Pheidippides Run. Name The name Philippides is reported by Pausanias (geographer), Pausanias, Plutarch, and Lucian, writers who had read this name in their versions of Herodotus, while in most of Herodotus's manuscripts the form appears Pheidippides. Other than Herodotus's manuscripts, the form Pheidippides is only attested in Aristophanes's ''The Clouds'' (423 BC). Orlen Warsaw Marathon
The Orlen Warsaw Marathon is an annual road running event over the marathon distance () that takes place in April on the streets of Warsaw, Poland. The event was established in 2013 and has Polish oil company PKN Orlen as its title sponsor. It was the second annual marathon race for the city, following on from the success of the Warsaw Marathon, which has been held in the city, generally in September, since 1979.
