Manx Museum
The Manx Museum () in Douglas, Isle of Man is the national museum of the Isle of Man. It is run by Manx National Heritage. The museum covers 10,000 years the history of the Isle of Man from the Stone Age to the modern era. The museum serves as headquarters of Manx National Heritage. The museum bears no relation to the institution with the same name founded by Trevor Ashe in 1825. History The Manx Museum and Ancient Monuments Act of 1886 led to the creation of a national museum for the Isle of Man with the aim of preserving the island's cultural and historical heritage. Although there had previously been an institution on the Isle of Man named the ''Manx Museum,'' founded by entrepreneur, author, and publisher Trevor Ashe in 1825, it has no relation to the Manx Museum run by Manx National Heritage. The Isle of Man ( , also ), or Mann ( ), is a self-governing British Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea, between Great Britain and Ireland. Tourist Trophy Races
The Isle of Man TT or Tourist Trophy races are an annual motorcycle racing event run on the Isle of Man in May and June of most years since its inaugural race in 1907. The event begins on the UK Spring Bank Holiday at the end of May and runs for thirteen days. It is often called one of the most dangerous racing events in the world as many competitors have died. Overview The Isle of Man TT is run in a time-trial format on public roads closed to the public by an Act of Tynwald. The event consists of one week of practice and qualifying sessions followed by one week of racing. House Of Manannan
The House of Manannan is a museum in Peel, Isle of Man, Peel in the Isle of Man. It is named after the "great mythological sea god" Manannán mac Lir, Manannan and covers the island's Celtic, Viking, and Maritime history. History The museum is located in the former Peel railway station. The original building was built in 1873 and closed in September 1968 with the closure of the Isle of Man Railway stations#The Peel Line (closed), Peel line between Douglas, Isle of Man, Douglas and Peel. In 1979 it was used to house ''Odin's Raven''. In 1997 the building was then repurposed and expanded to suit the needs of the museum at a cost of £5.5 million. Castle Rushen
Castle Rushen () is a medieval castle located in the Isle of Man's historic capital, Castletown, in the south of the Island. It towers over the Market Square to the south-east and the harbour to the north-east. The castle is amongst the best examples of medieval castles in Europe and is still in use as a museum and educational centre. Construction Construction is thought to have taken place during the 10th-century reigns of rulers of the Isle of Man – the Kings of Mann and the Isles. An old oak beam was found in the castle in the mid-19th century that contained the date 947. Jennifer Kewley Draskau
Margaret Jennifer Kewley Draskau (died 21 October 2024) was a Manx historian, linguist, teacher, political candidate and prominent figure in Isle of Man culture. She published several books, with her most notable work being the 2008 grammar, spelling and pronunciation reference book on the Manx Gaelic language, ''Practical Manx.'' Life Draskau was born on the Isle of Man, where her grandfather was a police inspector with the Isle of Man Constabulary. She attended The Buchan School in Castletown, and spent periods of her youth staying with Welsh-speaking cousins in Wales. She was fluent in several languages, including English, Danish, French, German and Manx, and was proficient in many others. She continued her education at the University of Manchester. William Hoggatt
William Hoggatt (1 September 1879 – 4 June 1961) was a British artist based in the Isle of Man. Early life and education Hoggatt was born on 1 September 1879 in Lancaster, UK. Instead of taking up his scholarship to the Royal College of Art, he stayed in Lancaster to continue an apprenticeship in stained glass with Shrigley and Hunt and his studies at the Storey Institute. Sponsored by H.L. Storey, he attended the Academie Julian in Paris from 1899 to 1901. After working at the Tate Gallery in London, Hoggatt moved to the Isle of Man with Dazine Archer in 1907 where they were married at Kirk Rushen on 20 April 1907. Work Hoggatt painted landscapes of the Isle of Man, many of which are now in the collection of Manx National Heritage with several on display at the Manx Museum.
