Manuelita is a Colombian agribusiness corporation, headquartered in Palmira, Valle del Cauca, Palmira, Valle del Cauca, Colombia. History Manuelita was founded in 1864 when James Martin Eder, better known in Colombia as Santiago Eder, an American citizen born in Mitau, Duchy of Courland, Courland, bought the hacienda "La Manuelita", located near Palmira, Colombia, Palmira, from the father of famed Colombian novelist Jorge Isaacs at a public auction. The farm's namesake was Manuela Ferrer Scarpetta, Isaacs' mother. James Martin Eder (June 24, 1838 – December 26, 1921), known in Colombia as Santiago Martín Eder Kaiser, Don (honorific), don Santiago Eder or simply "El Fundador", was a Russian-American-Colombian businessman who is considered the pioneer of Colombia’s sugar industry, and is widely recognized as one of that country's leading 19th-century industrial pioneers. Early life Eder was born to a Lithuanian Jews, Lithuanian Jewish family in Kuldiga, Goldingen in the Courland Governorate in the Russian Empire.
