''Dune: The Butlerian Jihad'' is a 2002 science fiction novel by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, set in the fictional ''Dune'' universe created by Frank Herbert. It is the first book in the ''Legends of Dune'' prequel trilogy, which takes place over 10,000 years before the events of Frank Herbert's celebrated 1965 novel ''Dune''. The series chronicles the fictional Butlerian Jihad, a crusade by the last free humans in the universe against the thinking machines, a violent and dominating force led by the sentient computer Omnius. ''Dune: The Butlerian Jihad'' rose to #7 on ''The New York Times'' Best Seller list in its second week of publication. Brian Herbert
Brian Patrick Herbert (born June 29, 1947) is an American author, known for his work on the ''Dune'' franchise, which was created by his father, Frank Herbert. Brian Herbert's novels include ''Sidney's Comet'', ''Prisoners of Arionn'', ''Man of Two Worlds'' (written with his father), and ''Sudanna Sudanna''. In 2003, Herbert wrote a biography of his father titled '' Dreamer of Dune: The Biography of Frank Herbert''. The younger Herbert has edited the '' Songs of Muad'dib'' and the ''Notebooks of Frank Herbert's Dune''. Herbert created a concordance for the ''Dune'' universe based on his father's notes, though, according to the younger Herbert, there are no immediate plans to publish it.
