Manhasset is an affluent hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. It is considered the anchor community of the Greater Manhasset area. The population was 8,176 at the time of the 2020 census. As with other unincorporated communities in New York, its local affairs are administered by the town in which it is located, the Town of North Hempstead, whose town hall is in Manhasset, making the hamlet the town seat. Etymology The name Manhasset was adopted for the community in 1840. It is most likely the anglicized rendition of the name of a nearby Native American tribe whose name translates to "the island neighborhood". History The Matinecock had a village on Manhasset Bay. Plandome Road is a road in Manhasset and the incorporated villages of Plandome, Plandome Heights, and Plandome Manor in the Town of North Hempstead, in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. It serves as a major north–south through street across the west side of the Cow Neck Peninsula, between Northern Boulevard (NY 25A) to the south and Stonytown Road and North Plandome Road to the north, and is the main thoroughfare in downtown Manhasset. The portion of Plandome Road within the Incorporated Village of Plandome Heights is maintained by the Nassau County Department of Public Works as unsigned County Route D92. North Hempstead, New York
North Hempstead (officially known as the Town of North Hempstead) is one of three towns in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 237,639 at the time of the 2020 census. It is the 7th largest city or town in New York by population. History The area was first settled by Europeans around 1643 and became part of the town of Hempstead. During the American Revolution the southern part of Hempstead was primarily Tory, while the northern part, having been settled by Yankees, supported the revolution. Following the war, the Town of North Hempstead was split off from Hempstead in 1784. Manhasset Bay
Manhasset Bay, New York, is an embayment in western Long Island off Long Island Sound. Description Manhasset Bay forms the northeastern boundary of the Great Neck Peninsula and the southwestern boundary of the Cow Neck Peninsula ( Port Washington Peninsula or Manhasset Neck), in Nassau County, New York. On the north side of the bay, there are three points, Barkers Point at the entrance, Plum Point coming the furthest into the Bay, and Tom's Point in the back bay. On the other side, Hewlett Point forms the entrance nearly a mile from Barkers Point. Hart Island lies in the Sound just outside the mouth of Manhasset Bay. The Cow Neck Peninsula is a peninsula in Nassau County, New York, on the North Shore of Long Island, in the United States. Description The Cow Neck Peninsula was named Cow Neck in the 17th century, in large part due to the fact that it served as a common pasture at the time. The Cow Neck Peninsula is famous for its affluence and historic communities, and was famous for its sand mines along Hempstead Harbor throughout the 20th century. North Hempstead Town Hall is a historic town hall building located on Plandome Road in Manhasset in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. Description The building serves as the main administrative building for the Town of North Hempstead. The original section was built in 1906–1907. Flanking additions were built in 1926-1928 and the large rear extension was completed in 1955. Metoac is an erroneous term used by some to group together the Munsee-speaking Lenape (west), Quiripi-speaking Unquachog (center) and Pequot-speaking Montaukett (east) American Indians on what is now Long Island in New York state.
