Manguinhos, Espírito Santo
Manguinhos is a small village in the municipality of Serra in Espírito Santo, Brazil, technically known as a neighbourhood (''Bairro'' in Portuguese). It is today mainly a residential village, as most people work in the Greater Vitória Metropolitan Area. Manguinhos is about 10 km north of Vitória. In 2000, the Manguinhos campus of UCL – Faculdade do Centro Leste was founded by faculty from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES). The college was acquired by the University of Vila Velha (UVV) in 2024. History The first mention of the area is said to have been made by Augustin Saint-Hilaire around 1818. While on one of his trips he went to Espirito Santo and refers to the ''ponta dos Fachos'', which is the name of a beach in Manguinhos to this day. Espírito Santo
Espírito Santo (; ) is a state in southeastern Brazil. Its capital is Vitória, and its largest city is Serra. With an extensive coastline, the state hosts some of the country's main ports, and its beaches are significant tourist attractions. The state is divided into 78 municipalities. Greater Vitória
Greater Vitória (''Região Metropolitana da Grande Vitória'') is a metropolitan area in Espírito Santo, Brazil. It is made up of the following municipalities: Cariacica, Fundão, Guarapari, Serra, Vitória, Vila Velha, and Viana and according to IBGE it covers an area of 2,331.01 km2 with 1,880,828 inhabitants (2022). It was established on February 21, 1995, when it was known as the Metropolitan Region of Vitória (RMV, ''Região Metropolitana de Vitória''), and later modified in 1999 and 2001, when it was renamed and it incorporated the municipalities of Guarapari and Fundão respectively. These seven municipalities are home to almost half of the total population of Espírito Santo (49%) and 57% of the state's urban population. The Federal University of Espírito Santo (, ''Ufes'') is a federal university with headquarters in the city of Vitória, capital of Espírito Santo state, in Brazil. It is the largest and most important university in the state of Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil. It is a public university, offering free, high-quality higher education by integrating teaching, research and outreach programs in all fields of knowledge. The university was founded in 1954, and today it comprises four campuses. Vila Velha
Vila Velha (; ) is a Brazilian municipality situated on the coast of the state of Espírito Santo, in the Southeast Region of Brazil. It is part of the Greater Vitória Metropolitan Area and covers an area of , of which is within the urban area. According to estimates by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in 2024, its population was inhabitants, making it the second most populous municipality in Espírito Santo, surpassed only by Serra. Augustin François César Prouvençal de Saint-Hilaire (4 October 17793 September 1853) was a French botanist and traveller who was born and died in Orléans, France. A keen observer, he is credited with important discoveries in botany, notably the direction of the radicle in the embryo sac and the double point of attachment of certain ovules. He also described two families, the Paronychiae and the Tamariscinae, as well as many genera and species. Biography He began to publish memoirs on botanical subjects at an early age. Moqueca Capixaba
Moqueca ( or depending on the dialect, also spelled muqueca) is a Brazilian seafood stew. Moqueca is typically made with shrimp or fish in a base of tomatoes, onions, garlic, lime, coriander, palm oil and coconut milk. The dish and its countless variations are present in the cuisine of several Brazilian states and compete for the position of national culinary symbol – in 2013, in a promotional survey by the Ministry of Tourism, the typical recipe that could not be missed on a tourist's table was chosen, even displacing feijoada.
