Manfred (horse)
Manfred was a notable Australian Thoroughbred race horse. By the champion sire Valais (GB) the Leading sire in Australia for 5 seasons between 1923 and 1928 from the mare Otford (AUS). Grandsire Cicero won the 1905 Epsom Derby. Manfred was purchased at the 1924 Sydney Easter Yearling Sales for the sum of 1,400 guineas by Ben Chaffey. Racing record A temperamental horse he officially raced 28 times in his career; however, he only took part in 22 of them, refusing to gallop in 6 of those races. He had an unimpressive record as a 2YO finishing well beaten in six races before his first win. Manfred went on to record victories in races including the 1925 VRC Derby, AJC Derby, Champagne Stakes and the W. S. Cox Plate as well as the 1926 Caulfield Cup. His most famous performance was in the AJC Derby where he refused to start until all six of his rivals had travelled half a furlong (100m). Although the word ''thoroughbred'' is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. The Trump was an Australian-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who won the Caulfield-Melbourne Cup double as well as two other principal (Group One) (G1) races in 1937. He showed his versatility by winning races over distances of six furlongs to two miles. Breeding He was a small horse (15 hands 1 inch) by the very good, but temperamental racehorse Manfred who was by the outstanding sire, Valais (GB). His dam Koanie was by the good racehorse Spearhead (GB) who sired 21 stakes-winners. The Caulfield Guineas is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race held over 1600 metres (1 mile) at set weights for three-year-old horses at Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia. Ben Chaffey
Ben Chaffey (1876 – 3 March 1937) was a butcher, pastoralist and businessman in Australia. He was active in horse racing. Early life Ben Chaffey was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, the son of engineer George Chaffey and his wife Ann. The family came to Australia in 1885 and Ben lived with his parents in Mildura, Victoria. Business interests Chaffey worked as a butcher, but his fortune started with a winning gamble on his horse "Mavis". He became the owner of Moorara station in New South Wales, followed by Tapio, Culpaulin, Cuthero, Avoca. Kilfera, Manfred, Tolarno and other properties, most of which were subsequently taken up by the Crozier family. He was elected chairman of the board of directors of United Distillers Pty.
