Manakin Sabot, consisting of the villages of Manakin and Sabot, is an affluent Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Goochland County, Virginia, Goochland County, Virginia, United States. It is located northwest of Richmond, Virginia, Richmond in the Piedmont (United States), Piedmont and is part of the Richmond-Petersburg, Greater Richmond region. History Prior to the arrival of European colonists, the area was settled by the Native American Monacan people, Monacan people, who constructed a village called Mowhemcho above the falls of the James River. It was the easternmost village of their confederacy as noted on a map of Virginia in 1612 by Capt. John Smith. They were Siouan-speaking, like other tribes of the uplands. Rochambeau Farm is a historic home and farm complex located near Manakin-Sabot, Goochland County, Virginia. The main dwelling was built about 1855, and is an L-shaped full two-story frame structure set on a common bond brick foundation in the Greek Revival style. It has a low hip roof and three single-story colonnade porches. Huguenot Memorial Chapel and Monument is a historic church located at Manakin, Powhatan County, Virginia. Built in 1700 by French Huguenots, Protestant refugees, it was moved to its current location in 1710. Dover Slave Quarter Complex
The Dover Slave Quarter Complex is a set of five historic structures located on Brookview Farm near Manakin-Sabot, Goochland County, Virginia. They were built as one-story, two-unit, brick structures with steep gable roofs for housing African-American slaves. The houses are arranged in a wide arc, measuring in length. The center dwelling had a frame second-story added and its brick walls covered by siding when it was converted to an overseer's house. It has a recent rear addition. In addition to the center dwelling, one of the former slave dwellings serves as the farm office, one serves as a woodworking shop, and the remaining two are used for storage. Ben Dover, also known as Ben Dover Farm, is a historic home and plantation complex, recognized as a national historic district, located near Manakin-Sabot in Goochland County, Virginia, United States. The district encompasses 13 contributing buildings, 8 contributing sites, and 10 contributing structures. History Site The main dwelling was built in 1853 as a villa or the Big House of the plantation, in an Italianate style. When renovated in 1930, it was transformed when given a Colonial Revival facade to mask decades of deterioration and poor patchwork. Contributing buildings, many of later construction, include tenant houses, a converted servants quarters (former slave quarters), a garage, a number of barns and sheds, a bowling alley, a smokehouse, and a stable. Powhatan County () is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 30,033. Its county seat is Powhatan. Powhatan County is included in the Greater Richmond Region. The James River forms the county's northern border, and the Appomattox River is on the south side. The county is named for the paramount chief of the powerful confederacy of tribes of Algonquian-speaking Native Americans in the Tidewater in 1607, when the British settled at Jamestown.
