Ferry County is a county located on the northern border of the U.S. state of Washington. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,178, making it the fourth-least populous county in Washington. The county seat and largest city is Republic. The county was created out of Stevens County in February 1899 and is named for Elisha P. Ferry, the state's first governor. Area code 509 is the telephone area code for the eastern two-thirds of the state of Washington. The western boundary of 509 roughly follows the Cascades. The 509 area code includes Spokane, the Tri-Cities ( Richland, Pasco, and Kennewick), Ellensburg, Yakima, Walla Walla, and Wenatchee. The 509 code was created in a split from 206, originally the area code for all of Washington, in a flash-cut on January 1, 1957. This part of Washington is not as densely populated as the west, and the great majority of the state's landlines and cell phones are located west of the Cascades. As a result, while western Washington went from one area code to four during the 1990s, 509 has remained unchanged for over 60 years. Washington State Route 21
State Route 21 (SR 21) is a long state highway in the U.S. state of Washington that traverses four counties: Franklin, Adams, Lincoln and Ferry. The highway extends from an intersection with in Kahlotus north through Lind, Odessa, Clark, Keller, Republic and Curlew before becoming (BC 41) at the Canada–US border in Danville. Republic is a city in Ferry County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,073 at the 2010 census, a 12.5% increase over the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Ferry County.
