Mali At The 2012 Summer Olympics
Mali competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics held in London, from 27 July to 12 August 2012. This was the nation's 12th appearance at the Olympics, although not consecutive. Mali sent its smallest delegation to the Games since the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Six Malian athletes, four men and two women, qualified to compete in four sports. Taekwondo jin and double-time world heavyweight champion Daba Modibo Keita missed out on winning a medal, which would have been Mail's first Olympic medal, after he withdrew from the bronze medal bout because of the injuries he had sustained. François Coulombe-Fortier
François Coulombe-Fortier (born November 15, 1984) is a Canadian taekwondo practitioner. In 2011 Coulombe-Fortier won a bronze medal at the 2011 Pan American Games and later in the year followed up by winning a silver medal at the 2011 Pan American Taekwondo Olympic Qualification Tournament, Pan American Olympic qualification tournament, and by doing so qualified to compete at the 2012 Summer Olympics. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he reached the quarter-finals, defeating Gadzhi Umarov in the first round before losing to Daba Modibo Keïta, Daba Modibo Keita in the quarterfinal. Taekwondo At The 2012 Summer Olympics – Men's +80 Kg
The men's 80 kg competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics was held on 10 August, at the ExCeL Exhibition Centre. Competition format The main bracket consisted of a single elimination tournament, culminating in the gold medal match. Two bronze medals were awarded at the Taekwondo competitions. A repechage was used to determine the bronze medal winners. Every competitor who lost to one of the two finalists competed in the repechage, another single-elimination competition. Each semifinal loser faced the last remaining repechage competitor from the opposite half of the bracket in a bronze medal match. Daba Modibo Keïta (born 5 April 1981) is a Malian taekwondo athlete. Keïta has competed in international competitions since 1996, and in 2007 became the heavyweight (+84 kg) division 2007 World Taekwondo Champion in Beijing, and competed in both the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics in the +80 kg class. Personal life Keïta was born in Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire) to Malian parents, and was named for the first President of Mali, Modibo Keita. He was forced to flee the country with his family in 2000 during the wave of xenophobia which preceded the Ivorian Civil War. Settling in Mali, Keïta had little funding for training, but received an IOC Olympic Solidarity Scholarship to pay for his training with Ivorian fighter Patrice Remarck in the United States.
