The county has been self-governing since February 5, 1844. It was named after Chief Mahaska of the Iowa people. Mahaska County Courthouse
The Mahaska County Courthouse in Oskaloosa, Iowa, United States, was built in 1886. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 as a part of the County Courthouses in Iowa Thematic Resource. In 1986 it was included as a contributing property in the Oskaloosa City Square Commercial Historic District. The courthouse is the second building the county has used for court functions and county administration. History Mahaska County, Iowa, Mahaska County's first courthouse was built during the winter of 1844–1845. It was a two-story frame structure that measured . Iowa Highway 23 (Iowa 23) is a state highway in the southeastern part of the state. Its designation begins at Iowa 149 north of Ottumwa and ends at Iowa 92 in Oskaloosa. The route was created in 1997 when U.S. Highway 63 (US 63) was rerouted along a new, four-lane expressway that subsumed part of a previous Iowa 23.
