Maginnis, Walsh and Sullivan, an American architecture firm active from its founding in 1898 to its dissolution in 1905. The principals were Charles Donagh Maginnis (1867-1955), Timothy Francis Walsh (1868-1934), and Matthew Sullivan (1868-1948). Sullivan left the firm in 1905 for solo practice; the other two continued as Maginnis & Walsh for decades. Charles Donagh Maginnis
Charles Donagh Maginnis (January 7, 1867 – February 15, 1955) was an Irish-American architect. He emigrated to Boston at age 18, trained as an architect and went on to form the firm Maginnis & Walsh, designing ecclesiastical and campus buildings across America. From 1937 to 1939, Maginnis held the office of President of the American Institute of Architects. Biography Maginnis was born in County Londonderry, Ireland, on January 7, 1867. He was educated in Dublin, emigrated to Boston at age 18 and got his first job apprenticing for architect Edmund M. Wheelwright as a draftsman. In 1900, he became a member of the Boston Society of Architects, serving as its president from 1924 to 1926. Though he worked in a number of styles, Maginnis became a distinguished proponent of Gothic architecture and an articulate writer and orator on the role of architecture in society. Peabody & Stearns was a premier architectural firm in the Eastern United States in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, the firm consisted of Robert Swain Peabody (1845–1917) and John Goddard Stearns Jr. (1843–1917). Timothy Francis Walsh (November 8, 1868 – July 7, 1934) was an American architect and partner in the firm Maginnis, Walsh and Sullivan and Maginnis & Walsh who designed more than 115 ecclesiastical buildings and numerous university buildings over the course of his career. Biography Timothy Francis Walsh was born November 8, 1868, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to James Walsh and Hanna Shea. His brother, James Anthony Walsh, was the co-founder of Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers. Walsh attended The English High School in Boston and graduated in 1886. In 1887, Walsh worked as a draftsman for Peabody and Stearns and worked at the firm until 1893 when he left to study in Europe. He studied in Paris atiliers, where received his professional education. Walsh returned to Boston in 1895 and formed a partnership named Walsh & Kearns which lasted for about a year.
