Maghull
Maghull ( ) is a town and civil parish in Sefton, Merseyside, England. The town is north of Liverpool and west of Kirkby. The town is also the location of Ashworth Hospital. Maghull had a population of 20,444 at the 2011 Census. Housing in the town is almost entirely a 20th-century settlement of semi-detached and detached housing although remains of the original town do exist. The town has had an elected council since the Local Government Act 1894 when the government set up a network of local governance across England. Following the Local Government Act 1974, the council changed its name from a parish to a town council. Etymology It has been proposed by Dr Eilert Ekwall that the name Maghull may have been derived from the Celtic word ''magos'' referring to a plain or field, and the Old English ''halh'' referring to a corner or nook, giving the meaning of a "flat land in a bend". Kennessee Green
Kennessee Green is a village in the southern half of Maghull in Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, Merseyside, England. Kennessee Green has two churches: St Andrew's Church and St. Georges Church. The village of Kennessee Green is situated around Maghull railway station, St Andrew's Church and the former epileptic homes located around Damfield Lane and Deyes Lane. The village also contains two high schools, Deyes High School and Maricourt High School. History Historically in Lancashire, Kennessee Green grew when the Liverpool, Ormskirk and Preston Railway was founded. River Alt
The River Alt is an urban river that flows across Merseyside in England. The river has suffered from heavy pollution from industry and sewage upstream and run-off from farmland in its lower reaches. It empties into the River Mersey, near to where the Mersey itself flows into the Irish Sea. The river has benefited from clean-up schemes and a de-culverting process to improve its water quality and provide a better environment for wildlife. Etymology The river's name might be of Latin origin (meaning ''muddy river'') but the banks of the river are lined by villages and places with names of Old Norse derivation. Melling is a village and civil parishes in England, civil parish within the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, in Merseyside, England. At the United Kingdom Census 2001, 2001 Census the population was recorded as 2,810, rising to 3,493 at the 2011 Census. The Metropolitan Borough of Sefton is a metropolitan borough of Merseyside, England. It was formed on Local Government Act 1972, 1 April 1974, by the amalgamation of the county boroughs of Bootle and Southport, the municipal borough of Crosby, Merseyside, Crosby, the Urban district (Great Britain and Ireland), urban districts of Formby and Litherland, and part of West Lancashire Rural District. Lydiate
Lydiate is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in Merseyside (historically in Lancashire), England. It is located north of Maghull, with which it has a common history. At the 2001 Census the civil parish of Lydiate had a population of 6,672, reducing to 6,308 at the 2011 Census. History There is evidence that the settlement of the area dates back to at least the middle of the 10th century. Indeed, one possible root of the name is the Old English ''hlid-geat'' meaning 'swing gate', which would have an association with animal farming. Lydiate is mentioned in the ''Domesday Book'', and is described as having a "wood a mile long", and there is evidence of the existence of extensive forests at that time, particularly of oak and elm.
