Maffeo Barberini
Pope Urban VIII (; ; baptised 5 April 1568 – 29 July 1644), born Maffeo Vincenzo Barberini, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 6 August 1623 to his death, in July 1644. As pope, he expanded the papal territory by force of arms and advantageous politicking, and was also a prominent patron of the arts, commissioning works from artists like Gian Lorenzo Bernini and a reformer of Church missions. His papacy also covered 21 years of the Thirty Years' War. The massive debts incurred during his pontificate greatly weakened his successors, who were unable to maintain the papacy's longstanding political and military influence in Europe. He was also an opponent of Copernicanism and was involved in the Galileo affair, which saw the astronomer tried for heresy. He is the last pope to date to take the papal name ''Urban''. Maffeo Barberini (19 August 1631 – 28 November 1685) was an Italian nobleman of the Barberini and '' Prince of Palestrina''. He was appointed Gonfalonier of the Church. Family Born in 1631, Barberini was one of the five children of Taddeo Barberini and Anna Colonna, daughter of Filippo I Colonna. His siblings included cardinal Carlo Barberini and Lucrezia Barberini who married Francesco I d'Este, Duke of Modena. His great uncle (on his father's side) was Barberini Pope Urban VIII. Maffeo Gherardi (1406–1492), known as the Cardinal of Venice, was an Italian Roman Catholic bishop and cardinal. Life Maffeo Gherardi was born in Venice in 1406, the son of nobles Giovanni Gherardi and Cristina Barbarigo. He entered the Camaldolese Order when young, receiving the habit from Paolo Venerio, Abbot of the Monastery of St. Michael on Murano. Gherardi later became abbot of this monastery, and later Abbot General of the Camaldolese Order. In April 1466, the Venetian Senate unanimously elected him to be the Patriarch of Venice. Ambassadors of the Republic of Venice presented his selection to Pope Paul II on 31 October 1467 and the pope confirmed his appointment on 16 December 1468. He received the episcopal consecration in San Pietro di Castello on 9 April 1469 by the hands of the bishop of Torcello, Placido Pavanello. Maffeo Pantaleoni (; 2 July 1857 29 October 1924) was an Italian economist. Born in Frascati, at first he was a notable proponent of neoclassical economics. Later in his life, before and during World War I, he became an ardent Italian nationalist and syndicalist, with close ties to the Italian fascism movement. He was Minister of Finance in the Carnaro government of Gabriele D'Annunzio at Fiume, which lasted for fifteen months between 1919 and 1920. Shortly before his death in Milan, he was elected to the Italian Senate. Work Pantaleoni was a major contributor to the Italian school of economics known as La Scienza delle Finanze. Maffeo Vegio () (1407–1458) was an Italian poet who wrote in Latin; he is regarded by many as the finest Latin poet of the fifteenth century. Born near Lodi, Lombardy, Lodi, he studied at the University of Pavia, and went on to write some fifty works of both prose and poetry. His greatest reputation came as the writer of brief epic poetry, epics, the most famous of which was his continuation of Virgil's ''Aeneid'', known variously as the ''Supplementum'' (Supplement) or ''Aeneidos Liber XIII'' (Book 13 of the ''Aeneid''). Completed in 1428, this 600-line poem starts immediately after the end of Virgil's epic, and describes Aeneas's marriage to Lavinia and his eventual deification. He was born at Verona in 1576, and was a pupil of Luigi Benfatto, but derived more advantage from the works of his kinsman, Paolo Veronese Paolo Caliari (152819 April 1588), known as Paolo Veronese ( , ; ), was an Italian Renaissance painter based in Venice, known for extremely large history paintings of religion and mythology, such as ''The Wedding at Cana (Veronese), The Wedding ..., than from his master. He is said to have painted with uncommon celerity. Lois Maffeo (professionally known for much of her career as Lois) is an American musician and writer who lives in Olympia, Washington. She has been closely involved with and influenced many independent musicians, especially in the 1990s-era Olympia, Seattle and Washington, D.C. music scenes. Career Maffeo was raised in Phoenix, Arizona, and graduated in 1981 from Xavier College Preparatory, an all-female private Catholic high school. She moved to Olympia, Washington to attend The Evergreen State College. In 1989, Maffeo and drummer Pat Maley founded the band Courtney Love, the name of which is coincidentally identical to the musician of the same name. The duo released their first single in 1990 and broke up the next year. Maffeo began performing as "Lois" in 1992; she was usually joined by drummer Heather Dunn and various backing musicians.
