MTV Unplugged
''MTV Unplugged'' is an American television series on MTV. It showcases recorded live performances of popular music artists playing acoustic instrument, acoustic or "unplugged" variations of songs. The show aired regularly from 1989 to 1999. From 2000 to 2009, it aired less frequently and was usually billed as ''MTV Unplugged No. 2.0''. Since 2009, ''MTV Unplugged'' specials have aired occasionally, sometimes through online or Paid subscription, subscription only. Episodes and specials have tended to showcase one artist or group, playing a combination of their hit songs and covers. Many of the artists who appeared on the show in the 1990s released their ''Unplugged'' session as an album, and some of these albums were commercial and critical hits. Eric Clapton's ''Unplugged (Eric Clapton album), Unplugged'' (1992) sold 26 million copies worldwide and became the best-selling live album of all time. ''MTV Unplugged'' is the first live album by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira, released on 29 February 2000, by Sony Music Colombia and MTV Networks Latin America. It was recorded on 12 August 1999, during her ''MTV Unplugged'' performance at the Grand Ballroom in New York City. The performance was released in 2000 as a live album, and again in 2002 as a DVD. James Burns (c. 1952 – December 26, 2017) was an American television producer and writer who co-created ''MTV Unplugged'' with Robert Small (producer), Robert Small in 1989. ''Unplugged'', which originally aired on MTV from 1989 to 1999, featured well-known musicians performing acoustic versions of their songs. The show, which was also produced by Burns and Small, earned three Primetime Emmy Awards during its initial ten-year run.
