Mpho Skeef (pronounced /mpʰo skʲɪəf/, born ), known by her stage name of Mpho, is a South African-born British singer-songwriter based in London. Early and personal life Skeef was born during the Apartheid in South Africa, apartheid regime in South Africa to Sipho Mabuse and Mary Edwards. Her first name is a Sotho language, SeSotho word meaning "gift". Sipho Mabuse
Sipho Cecil Peter Mabuse (born 2 November 1951), known professionally as Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse, is a South African singer-songwriter. Mabuse grew up in Soweto. His mother was Zulu people, Zulu and his father was Tswana people, Tswana. Sipho and his band used to be managed by Solly Nkuta. After dropping out of school in the 1960s, Mabuse got his start in the Afro-soul group the Beaters in the mid-1970s. After a successful tour of Zimbabwe they changed the group's name to Harari (band), Harari, an afrosoul band led by Mabuse. When they returned to their homeland in South Africa they began to draw almost exclusively on American-style funk, soul music, soul, and pop music, sung in Zulu language, Zulu and Sotho language, Sotho as well as English. He has also recorded and produced for, among others, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Ray Phiri and Sibongile Khumalo. Wall of Sound is a British independent record label based in London, England, and was founded by Mark Jones in 1994. They were considered to be "at the center of the revolution" of the big beat movement in the mid- to late-1990s, releasing much of the UK material at the height of the scene alongside Brighton's Skint Records. The label is most known for introducing internationally renowned big beat acts such as Propellerheads, The Wiseguys and Les Rythmes Digitales. Coldcut are an English electronic music duo composed of Matt Black and Jonathan More. Switch (producer)
David James Andrew Taylor, better known by his stage name Switch, is an English record producer, songwriter, DJ, and sound engineer. He is best known for his work with Beyoncé, M.I.A. and Major Lazer, of which he was a founding member. He was nominated at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards in the Record of the Year category for "Paper Planes" by M.I.A., which he co-produced with Diplo. Martha and the Muffins are a Canadian rock band, active from 1977 to the present. Although they only had one major international hit single "Echo Beach" under their original band name, they had a number of hits in their native Canada, and the core members of the band also charted in Canada and internationally as M + M. Career Formation and early years (1977–1978) The group's initial line-up came together in Toronto in 1977, when David Millar asked his fellow Ontario College of Art student Mark Gane to help him start a band. Millar recruited Martha Johnson to play keyboards; Johnson brought in a friend from high school, Carl Finkle, to play bass; and Gane's brother Tim signed on as the drummer. Echo Beach
"Echo Beach" is a song by Canadian musical group Martha and the Muffins. Written by band member Mark Gane, it was released as a single from their album '' Metro Music'' in 1980 and went on to reach number five in Canada, number six in Australia, and number 10 in the UK. It was certified gold in Canada on October 1, 1980, a month after ''Metro Music'' achieved gold status; the song also won the Juno Award for Single of the Year. "Echo Beach" was the band's only significant international hit, although they had other popular singles in Canada. Background Echo Beach in the song is not a real place. It's a metaphor for a pleasant location that someone thinks of when they have an unsatisfactory job. There is now an Echo Beach in Toronto, but it was named after the song.
