Léonce Bénédite
Léonce Bénédite (14 January 1859 – 12 May 1925) was a French art historian and curator. He was a co-founder of the Société des Peintres Orientalistes Français (Society for French Orienalist Painters) and was instrumental in establishing Orientalist art as a legitimate genre. He was the assistant curator at the Chateau de Versailles between 1882 and 1886; the assistant curator at the Chateau de Versailles between 1886; and from 1886 he was the first assistant director at Étienne Arago at the Musée du Luxembourg until 1892 when he became the Director. For Bénédite, writing was inseparable from his function as curator. He was a prolific writer, contributing to books, catalogs and art journals. Bénédite was one of the executors of Auguste Rodin's will, with responsibility for managing Rodin's artistic heritage. Amélie Beaury-Saurel
Am̩lie Beaury-Saurel (1849 РMay 30, 1924) was a French painter noted for portraiture. Life and career Born in Barcelona as Am̩lie Beaury, she added "Saurel" to her name in recognition of her mother's family who could trace their lineage to the Byzantine emperors of the 11th century. Her family lived in Spain and Corsica, but eventually settled in France where she enrolled in the Academie Julian and paid for her studies by carrying out administrative duties and managing the finances. At various times, she was a pupil of J. Lefebvre, T. Robert-Fleury and J.P. Laurens in Acad̩mie Julian, and became a very popular portrait painter, thanks to L̩on Bonnat. She married Rodolphe Julian in 1895 and took on charge a women's atelier. François Bonvin
Fran̤ois Bonvin (November 22, 1817 РDecember 19, 1887) was a French Realism (arts), realist painter. Early life Bonvin was born in humble circumstances in Paris, the son of a police officer and a seamstress. When he was four years old his mother died of tuberculosis and young Fran̤ois was left in the care of an old woman who underfed him. Soon his father married another seamstress and brought the child back into the household. Nine additional children were born (one of whom was L̩on Bonvin). The family's resources were severely strained, and to make matters worse his stepmother took to abusing and undernourishing Fran̤ois. The young Bonvin started drawing at an early age. ''Olympia'' is a painting by Édouard Manet, first exhibited at the 1865 Paris Salon, which shows a nude woman ("Olympia") lying on a bed being brought flowers by a servant. Olympia was modelled by Victorine Meurent and Olympia's servant by the art model Laure. Judith Cladel, (March 25, 1873 – January 29, 1958) was a French playwright, novelist, biographer and journalist. Life and career Born and lived in Paris, she was a member of the jury of the prix Femina from 1916 to 1958. She began to write at a very young age, encouraged by her father, the novelist Léon Cladel. James Abbott McNeill Whistler (; July 10, 1834July 17, 1903) was an American painter active during the American Gilded Age and based primarily in the United Kingdom. Max Liebermann
Max Liebermann (20 July 1847 – 8 February 1935) was a German painter and printmaker, and one of the leading proponents of Impressionism in Germany and continental Europe. In addition to his activity as an artist, he also assembled an important collection of French Impressionist works. The son of a Jewish banker, Liebermann studied art in Weimar, Paris, and the Netherlands. After living and working for some time in Munich, he returned to Berlin in 1884, where he remained for the rest of his life. Alphonse Legros
Alphonse Legros (8 May 1837 – 8 December 1911) was a French, later British, painter, etcher, sculptor, and medallist. He moved to London in 1863 and later took British citizenship. He was important as a teacher in the British etching revival. Life Legros was born in Dijon; his father was an accountant, and came from the neighbouring village of Véronnes. Jean Alexandre Joseph Falguière (also given as Jean-Joseph-Alexandre Falguière, or in short Alexandre Falguière) (7 September 183120 April 1900) was a French sculptor and painter. Biography Falguière was born in Toulouse.
