Little River, New Zealand
Little River is a town on Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury region of New Zealand. Location Little River is approximately 30 minutes drive from Akaroa, a tourist destination on Banks Peninsula, and 45 minutes drive from Christchurch. It is on State Highway 75, which links Christchurch and Akaroa. The road from Christchurch is at sea level but once past Little River, the road rises steeply to the top of the summit road. From the summit at Hilltop, all of the bays on the peninsula are accessible on equally steep roads. Not all roads are sealed and some are more suited to four wheel drive vehicles. Rail Trail The Little River Rail Trail is a cycling and walking track that opened in 2006, which largely follows the course of the old Little River Branch railway that ran to Little River from its junction with the Southbridge Branch in Lincoln. Lake Forsyth
Lake Forsyth (known to Māori as Te Roto o Wairewa) is a lake on the south-western side of Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury region of New Zealand, near the eastern end of the much larger Lake Ellesmere / Te Waihora. State Highway 75 to Akaroa and the Little River Rail Trail run along the north-western side of the lake. The lake is fed by the Takiritawai River. Its natural discharge into the sea is through a gravel bank at the small community of Birdlings Flat. Wairewa was an important source of eels as food for the Ngāi Tahu tribe (indigenous Maori people of the South Island). It is the only Ngāi Tahu customary lake. The Wairewa Rūnanga, one of 18 rūnanga of Ngāi Tahu, are the guardians or kaitiaki of the lake. Deforestation of the surrounding hills has led to erosion and silting up of the lake. Okana River
The Okana River, formerly called the Ohiriri River, is a river on Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. It flows southwest past the settlement of Little River where it meets the Okuti River, the two rivers forming the short Takiritawai River which flows into the northern end of Lake Forsyth. On 19 October 2011, the Okana River caused the worst flooding in Little River for many years, with State Highway 75 closed. Long-term residents believe that the flooding was the worst since the ''Wahine'' storm on 10 April 1968. Birdlings Flat
Birdlings Flat, originally named Te Mata Hapuku, is a settlement in Canterbury, New Zealand, at the eastern end of Kaitorete Spit and the southern end of Lake Forsyth, where the lake discharges to the sea. It is not far from eastern end of Lake Ellesmere / Te Waihora. The name ''Birdlings Flat'' is also commonly used for the nearby pebble beach on the ocean side of Kaitorete Spit. The beach is well known as a place to find small agates and a variety of other attractive rounded pebbles. Due to strong ocean currents, swimming and surfing is not advised. Hector's dolphins live along the beach in notable numbers, and fur seals, whales such as southern right whales, and much more rarely elephant seals cavort and rest there. The 2013 New Zealand census was the thirty-third national census. "The National Census Day" used for the census was on Tuesday, 5 March 2013. The population of New Zealand was counted as 4,242,048, – an increase of 214,101 or 5.3% over the 2006 census.
