Albury () is a major regional city in New South Wales, Australia. It is located on the Hume Highway and the northern side of the Murray River. Albury is the seat of local government for the council area which also bears the city's name – the City of Albury. It is on the Victoria-New South Wales border. Albury has an urban population of 49,172 and is separated from its twin city in Victoria, Wodonga, by the Murray River. William Cleaver Woods
William Cleaver Woods, M.B., Ch.M. Edinburgh, M.D. (25 April 1852 – 9 April 1943) was a physician, politician and pioneer in Australian medical science specialising in X-rays for diagnostic applications and perhaps the first in the world to utilize X-rays for the treatment of cancer. Life and times In 1852, Woods was born in West Derby, Lancashire in England, the son of Richard Woods and Catherine née Cromwell. He was christened on 7 June 1852 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. At the age of 10, the family moved to Melbourne in Australia and Woods grew up in Ballarat. Woods, a physician from Liverpool, England, married Margaret, née Grieve from New South Wales. Doug Padman
Dudley Gordon Padman OBE (16 June 1885 – 31 August 1970) was a Liberal Party politician. Padman was born in Adelaide and educated at Bridgewater, South Australia and Prince Alfred College. He married Bertha Elizabeth Scholz in 1912 and they had a daughter and two sons. He was an alderman of Albury Council from 1930 to 1947 and Mayor from 1939 until 1945. Padman was elected as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing the seat of Albury in 1947, and served until 1965. He was made an OBE in 1966. Cleaver Ernest Bunton (5 May 190220 January 1999) was a long-serving Mayor of Albury, New South Wales, Australia, who came to national prominence in 1975 when he was controversially appointed to the Senate by New South Wales Liberal Party Premier, Tom Lewis, to fill a position vacated by an Australian Labor Party member. Early life Born in Albury, Bunton left school at 13 and initially worked as a clerk in a solicitor's office before becoming an accountant. He also was involved in Albury sporting and community affairs, playing Australian rules football with the Albury Football Club, becoming captain-coach and club secretary at 17. His younger brother Haydn Bunton went on to become a notable Australian rules footballer. Bunton married Eileen O'Malley in 1930. Harold Mair
Harold David Mair, OAM (2 June 1919 – 7 September 2011) was an Australian politician. Mair was mayor of Albury from 1976 until 1977. In 1978, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Albury, representing the Labor Party. He was only the second Labor member ever to win Albury since it was recreated in 1927, and to date the only Labor member to hold this traditionally conservative seat for more than one term. In 1988 he lost his seat to the Liberal Party's Ian Glachan, who had been his opponent in 1984.
