Puerto Rican People
Puerto Ricans ( es, Puertorriqueños; or boricuas) are the people of Puerto Rico, the inhabitants, and citizens of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and their descendants. Overview The culture held in common by most Puerto Ricans is referred to as a Western culture largely derived from the traditions of Spain, and more specifically Andalusia and the Canary Islands. Puerto Rico has also received immigration from other parts of Spain such as Catalonia as well as from other European countries such as France, Ireland, Italy and Germany. Puerto Rico has also been influenced by African culture, with many Puerto Ricans partially descended from Africans, though Afro-Puerto Ricans of unmixed African descent are only a significant minority. Missionary Society Of The Methodist Episcopal Church
The Primera Iglesia Metodista Unida de Ponce (English: ''First United Methodist Church of Ponce.'' Antonin Nechodoma
Antonin Nechodoma (1877–1928), was a Czech architect who practiced in Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic from 1905 to 1928. He is known for the introduction of the Prairie Style to the Caribbean and the integration of Arts and Crafts elements to his architecture. Nechodoma designed in such style at the historical district of Miramar, Puerto Rico where the town preserves his creation. Biography Antonin Nechodoma was born in Prague (then part of Bohemia) in 1877. In 1887, Nechodoma's family emigrated to Chicago where he worked as a contractor. In 1905, Nechodoma, already an architect, arrived in Puerto Rico after working for a short period in Florida. In Puerto Rico (1905–1928), Nechodoma became one of the most prominent architects in the Caribbean. His work included private and public buildings: banks, schools, markets, churches and houses. Pedro Méndez Mercado
Pedro Méndez Mercado was a twentieth-century Puerto Rican architect from Ponce, Puerto Rico. He designed many prominent structures, including the 1941 enlargement of Plaza de Mercado de Ponce in Ponce and the "Edificio Miami" (Miami Building) in San Juan. He also designed "Apartamentos Beatriz" in Ponce, and is believed to have designed at least half a dozen theaters in Ponce. Early years Pedro Méndez Mercado was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, on 26 June 1902. He was the second of eight children born to José Méndez López, a Spanish businessman with a store in Ponce across from Plaza de Mercado de Isabel Segunda, and Rosario Mercado Galarza, from Yauco, Puerto Rico. The Acueducto de Ponce (Ponce Aqueduct), formally Acueducto Alfonso XII, is the name of a historic 2.5-mileClarksburg Telegram. Clarksburg, West Virginia. Vol XXXVII. Number 38. 29 July 1898. Page 1. gravity-based water supply system in the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico. It was designed in 1875 by Timoteo Luberza and built the following years. This aqueduct was the first modern water distribution system built in Puerto Rico. Timoteo Luberza
Timoteo Luberza de San MartÃn (ca. 1820 - ca. 1895) was a nineteenth-century Puerto Rican engineer from Ponce, Puerto Rico. He was responsible for the 1875 Ponce water supply system, including the dam in Rio Portugues, and the ''Calle del Agua'' masonry arch aqueduct in barrio Portugues Urbano in Ponce. In 1864, he served briefly as mayor of the nearby town of Yauco. He is best remembered for designing Plaza del Mercado de Ponce. Works Luberza was Public Works Inspecting Engineer for Puerto Rico's Western District. Luberza also designed aqueducts, bridges, roads, and various buildings. In 1878, he owned hacienda ''Retiro'' in Barrio Vayas. Maruja Fuentes
Maruja Fuentes (March 4, 1978 – June 28, 2010) was a Puerto Rican architect and an industrial and environmental designer. Biography A native of Ponce, Puerto Rico, Maruja studied environmental design at the University of Puerto Rico, earned an undergraduate degree in architecture from the Catholic University of America, completed her master studies in architecture at Georgia Tech and studied furniture and textile design at Savannah College of Art and Design. Works Some of her work was featured in 2008 as part of the exhibit space IDSA.NYC reserved at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF). She achieved recognition with "Leaning Molds - Urban Furniture" winning a Red Dot Award 2009 for product design, one of the highest recognitions in the discipline of Design.
