This is a list of mayors of the Far North Queensland city of Cairns. Cairns was originally established as a Borough with a Chairman from 1885 until 1903, when the ''Local Authorities Act 1902'' transformed it into a Town with a Mayor. The Town achieved City status in 1923. In 1995, when the Shire of Mulgrave (Queensland), Shire of Mulgrave amalgamated into the City, the Mayor was elected by a much larger base of voters. In 2008, when the City was amalgamated with the Shire of Douglas into the Cairns Region, the Mayor's voter base expanded yet again. Far North Queensland
Far North Queensland (FNQ) is the northernmost part of the Australian state of Queensland. Its largest city is Cairns and it is dominated geographically by Cape York Peninsula, which stretches north to the Torres Strait, and west to the Gulf Country. City Of Cairns
The City of Cairns was a local government area centred on the Far North Queensland city of Cairns. Established in 1885, for most of its existence it consisted of approximately around Cairns itself, with much of the metropolitan area being located in the Shire of Mulgrave. The Shire amalgamated into the City on 22 March 1995, as did small sections of neighbouring shires. In 2008, the City amalgamated with the Shire of Douglas to become the Cairns Region. Shire Of Mulgrave (Queensland)
The Shire of Mulgrave was a local government area surrounding the City of Cairns in the Far North region of Queensland. The shire, administered from Cairns, covered an area of ; it existed as a local government entity from 1879 until 1995, when it was dissolved and amalgamated into the City of Cairns. History The Cairns Division was created on 11 November 1879 as one of 74 divisions around Queensland under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879'' with a population of 34. The Shire of Douglas is a Local government in Australia, local government area in Far North Queensland, Far North Queensland. It is located on the coast north of the city of Cairns, Queensland, Cairns. Cairns Region
The Cairns Region is a local government area in Far North Queensland, Queensland, Australia, centred on the regional city of Cairns. It was established in 2008 by the amalgamation of the City of Cairns and the Shires of Douglas and Mulgrave. However, following public protest and a referendum in 2013, on 1 January 2014, the Shire of Douglas was de-amalgamated from the Cairns Region and re-established as a separate local government authority. Richard Ash Kingsford
Richard Ash Kingsford (1821–1902) was an alderman and mayor of Brisbane Municipal Council, a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, Australia, and a mayor of Cairns, Queensland. Early life and education Richard Ash Kingsford was born on 2 October 1821 in Canterbury, Kent, England, the son of John Kingsford and Mary Anne Walker.Queensland Registrar-General of Births, Deaths & Marriages In 1852, after marrying Sarah Southerden, his first wife, in the fourth quarter of 1851, Kingsford and his wife emigrated to Sydney and, ultimately, relocated to Brisbane in 1854. Richard Alfred Tills
Richard Alfred Tills (1860–1937) was the fourth mayor of Cairns, Australia and the twelfth chairman when Cairns was classified as a borough, a member of the Barron Divisional Board, and president of the Cairns Chamber of Commerce. Born in Kingston upon Hull, England, Tills was a carpenter, architect and one of the pioneers of North Queensland. Early life and career Richard Alfred Tills was born on 12 June 1860 in Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. He was the eldest son of Alice Harrison and Alfred Tills, originally a carpenter, but a newsagent by the time Richard was born and later a grocer. Richard had two younger brothers, twins, Charles William and John Henry—John died at the age of 3. Richard worked as a master joiner in Hull before emigrating to Australia under the Assisted Immigration program, arriving in Mackay, Queensland, Mackay on 2 November 1882 at the age of 22.
