The 1936 United States House of Representatives elections were elections for the United States House of Representatives in 1936 that coincided with President Franklin D. Roosevelt's landslide re-election. Roosevelt's Democratic Party gained twelve net seats from the Republican Party, bringing them above a three-fourths majority. This was the largest majority since Reconstruction, as the last time a party won so decisively was in 1866. This is the last time any party held 3/4ths of all House seats. Significant representation from the Progressives of Wisconsin and Farmer–Labor Party of Minnesota is also seen, as these two liberal populist groups gained a foothold. The 1936 elections showed the continuing trust for the American people in that Roosevelt would guide the nation from depression. Liberal Republican Party (United States)
The Liberal Republican Party was an American political party that was organized in May 1872 to oppose the reelection of President Ulysses S. Grant and his Radical Republican supporters in the presidential election of 1872. The party emerged in Missouri under the leadership of Senator Carl Schurz and soon attracted other opponents of Grant; Liberal Republicans decried the scandals of the Grant administration and sought civil service reform. The party opposed Grant's Reconstruction policies, particularly the Enforcement Acts that destroyed the Ku Klux Klan. It lost in a landslide, and disappeared from the national stage after the 1872 election. Alexander "Aleck" Boarman (December 10, 1839 – August 30, 1916) was a United States representative from Louisiana and a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. Previously, he served in the Confederate States Army and as Mayor of Shreveport, Louisiana. Education and career Born on December 10, 1839, in Yazoo City, Yazoo County, Mississippi, Boarman lost his parents in infancy and was raised by relatives in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana. He attended the common schools of Shreveport and Kentucky Military Institute in Franklin, Kentucky, graduated from Kentucky University (now Transylvania University) in 1860 and read law in 1860. The 1880 United States House of Representatives elections, coincided with the 1880 presidential election which was won by James A. Garfield, who was a member of the House at the time. Issues such as Civil War loyalties, tariffs, graft and corruption dominated the year's elections, though none became substantive a national issue. The economy was growing stronger after emerging from a long Depression. It was in this political environment that Garfield's Republican Party gained 19 seats and regained control of the House from the Democratic Party. The 1896 United States House of Representatives elections, coincided with the election of President William McKinley. The Republican Party maintained its large majority in the House but lost 48 seats, mostly to the Democratic and Populist parties. The Republican losses were most likely due to the extraordinary gains that party made in the prior elections, when many normally Democratic districts voted Republican due to the severity of and fallout from the Panic of 1893. The Democratic Party recovered in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern districts dominated by Catholic and working-class voters. In the West, the Populist Party made large gains and several Republicans broke away over the national party platform's endorsement of a gold standard.
