City Of Malvern
The City of Malvern was a local government area about southeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The city covered an area of , and existed from 1856 until 1994, when it was merged with the City of Prahran to create the City of Stonnington. History Malvern was incorporated as the Gardiner Road District on 17 October 1856, which became the Shire of Gardiner on 26 May 1871. It was renamed the Shire of Malvern on 15 February 1878. It then became a borough on 22 February 1901, a town on 24 April 1901 and a city on 30 May 1911. Accessed at State Library of Victoria, La Trobe Reading Room. On 22 June 1994, the City of Malvern was abolished, and along with the City of Prahran, was merged into the newly created City of Stonnington. The City of Prahran was a local government area about southeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. History Prahran (/pɛ'ræn/) was incorporated as a municipal district on 24 April 1855, and became a borough on 1 October 1863, a town on 13 May 1870, and a city on 30 May 1879. On 22 June 1994, the City of Prahran was abolished, and along with the City of Malvern, was merged into the newly created City of Stonnington. The City of Stonnington is a local government area located within the metropolitan area of Melbourne, Australia. It comprises the inner south-eastern suburbs, between , from the Melbourne CBD. The city covers an area of . Within twenty years of the settlement of Melbourne in 1835, the Prahran Municipality (later City of Prahran) was formed in 1855, followed by the Gardiner Road Board (later City of Malvern) in 1856. The late 19th century saw substantial residential and commercial development such that by 1891 Prahran had a population of almost 40,000 and Malvern 11,000. Following the election of the Kennett government in the Spring of 1992, as part of a comprehensive reorganisation of local government in Victoria, the Cities of Malvern and Prahran were amalgamated to form the City of Stonnington. James Munro (Australian Politician)
James Munro (7 January 1832 – 25 February 1908) was a Scottish born Australian businessman and colonial politician, and the 15th Premier of Victoria. He is best known as one of the leading figures in the land boom of the 1880s and especially the subsequent crash of the early 1890s, where his Christian morals were seen to clash with his business activities. Early life James Munro was born in Armadale, Sutherland, Scotland, to Donald Munro and his wife, Georgina. James Munro's grandparents were an Alexander Munro of the family of Foulis, Ross-shire and Barbara Mackay, a relative of the chief of Clan Mackay. After a primary education at a village school in Armadale, Sutherland he left home for Edinburgh and joined a firm of publishers. In December 1853, he married Jane MacDonald, and had a family of four sons and three daughters. In 1858, he emigrated to Victoria where he set up a printing business. Frederick Francis (Australian Politician)
Frederick Henry Francis (1881 – 15 August 1949) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1919 to 1925, representing the Victorian seat of Henty as a Nationalist-aligned independent. He also served a term as mayor of the City of Malvern. Early life Francis was born at Port Melbourne and was a builder and then an estate agent before entering politics. He was a City of Malvern councillor for sixteen years, including a stint as mayor. He was also a justice of the peace. He had attempted to enlist in World War I but was rejected. He was an unsuccessful candidate at the 1917 state election. Federal politics In 1919, he contested the Australian House of Representatives seat of Henty as an independent Nationalist and defeated the sitting Nationalist MP, James Boyd, on Labor preferences. Stonnington City Centre
Malvern Town Hall is the former town hall of the municipality of Malvern in the state of Victoria, Australia. It is the seat of the local government area of the City of Stonnington. The Second Empire and Italianate style Victorian era building is located on the northeast corner of Glenferrie Road and High Street, in Malvern. History Planning for a Shire Hall in the Gardiner Road District commenced as early as 1867. In 1878 land at the corner of High Street and Glenferrie Road was reserved for a Shire Hall, Court House and Library. Two years later, the estimated cost of erecting a building comprising a Shire Hall, Municipal, Post and Telegraph Offices, Library and Reading Room was £4,000. The Council considered the Shire could not afford to pay such a sum, and the members were against borrowing the money.
