Edward William Davies
Edward William Davies was elected mayor of Fremantle, Western Australia, in 1901, but was removed two months later on the grounds of insanity. Background Davies was the son of Alfred Alexander Davies, who had arrived in Fremantle in 1834 and who had another son, George Alfred Davies, who was born in 1846. Edward Davies was born in Fremantle in 1855. In 1875 his father died, and in December that year Davies married Kate Murray. In July 1876, Davies appeared in court on a charge of seduction brought against him by William Thorpe, a farmer, on behalf of his daughter Rosina. In the early 1880s Davies became a pawnbroker. At the same time, he was working to improve his social position in Fremantle: he joined local lodges, institutes and societies and was active on their committees, and in 1887 became rate collector to the Fremantle Municipal Council. Bill McKenzie (mayor)
William Albany "Bill" McKenzie AO (21 May 1928 – 2 May 1991) was an Australian local government politician and public servant from Western Australia. He served as Mayor of Fremantle from 1972 to 1984, head of the Western Australian Planning Commission from 1985 to 1989, and Administrator of Christmas Island (an Australian external territory) from 1990 until his death. McKenzie was born in Fremantle, and was raised in a house on South Street, Beaconsfield. He suffered from polio as a child, and carried his left arm in a sling for the rest of his life. McKenzie trained as a pharmacist, and eventually acquired his own business in Fremantle. He was elected to the Fremantle City Council in 1965, and in 1972 replaced Sir Frederick Samson as mayor. McKenzie continued Samson's emphasis on heritage protection during his term in office. Lionel Samson
Lionel Samson (1799-15 March 1878) was an early Swan River Colony settler and businessman whose firm, Lionel Samson & Son, is the second oldest continuing family business in Australia. It is likely his father was Michael Samson, "a member of one of the old established and wealthy families of English Jewry", according to the Australian Dictionary of Biography. After studying at Oxford University and being a member of the London Stock Exchange he emigrated to Western Australia. Samson arrived at Fremantle in 1829 on the '' Calista'' and soon set up business as a wine and spirit merchant, importer, and auctioneer. He also engaged in whaling. He purchased Fremantle town lots 27 and 28 in the first state land sale. He was postmaster-general from 1830 to 1832. In 1835 he obtained the state's first liquor license. Frank Gibson (politician)
Sir Frank Ernest Gibson (11 July 1878 – 31 December 1965) was an Australian politician. Born at Egerton, Victoria, to Irish-born policeman Alexander Gibson and Louisa Herring, he attended Grenville College and the School of Mines at Ballarat before moving to Western Australia as a qualified pharmacist, setting up a business in Leonora in 1909. He married Jean Rodger Dunkley on 10 August 1911 at Kalgoorlie. In 1914 he moved to Fremantle, of which he was mayor for twenty-nine years (1919–23, 1926–51). Gibson gave his official farewell speech on 19 November 1951 at last council meeting before the elections were held on 24 November, where William F Samson was elected unopposed as mayor. Joseph John Holmes
Joseph John Holmes (24 May 1866 – 25 April 1942) was an Australian politician who served in both houses of the Parliament of Western Australia. A minister in both governments of George Leake, he was a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1897 to 1904 and again from 1905 to 1906, and later a member of the Legislative Council from 1914 until his death. Early life Holmes was born in Mandurah, Western Australia, to Maria (née Wilson) and Robert Holmes. After leaving school, he worked in Mandurah for a time, and then went to Fremantle, where he founded a meat processing firm with his three brothers. The firm, Holmes Brothers, later expanded to Perth and to the Eastern Goldfields (during the gold rushes of the 1890s), generating large profits. William Murphy (Australian Politician)
William Alfred Murphy (1 March 1858 – 11 October 1929) was an English-born Australian politician. He was born in Liverpool, England and was educated there and in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He worked for a Boston-based firm before going to sea and arriving in Sydney, Australia in 1879. He returned for a period to England, but was soon a key figure in the New South Wales labour movement. In 1891 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Balmain representing the new Labor Party, but disputes over the pledge led to him contesting the 1894 election as a Protectionist unsuccessfully. Murphy moved to Fremantle in Western Australia around the time of the conclusion of his New South Wales parliamentary term. He worked for the Customs Department for eight years before going into business as a customs agent.
