Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. Melbourne University Publishing (MUP) is the book publishing arm of the University of Melbourne. History MUP was founded in 1922 as Melbourne University Press to sell text books and stationery to students, and soon began publishing books itself. The name ''Melbourne University Publishing'' was adopted for the business in 2003 following a restructure by the university, but books continue to be published under the ''Melbourne University Press'' imprint. The Miegunyah Press is an imprint of MUP, established in 1967 under a bequest from businessman and philanthropist Russell Grimwade, with the intention of subsidising the publication of illustrated scholarly works that would otherwise be uneconomic to publish. The ''Australian Dictionary of Biography'' (ADB or AuDB) is a national co-operative enterprise founded and maintained by the Australian National University (ANU) to produce authoritative biographical articles on eminent people in Australia's history. Initially published in a series of twelve hard-copy volumes between 1966 and 2005, the dictionary has been published online since 2006 by the National Centre of Biography at ANU, which has also published ''Obituaries Australia'' (OA) since 2010. History The ADB project has been operating since 1957. Staff are located at the National Centre of Biography in the History Department of the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University. Alexander Forrest
Alexander Forrest CMG (22 September 1849 – 20 June 1901) was an explorer and surveyor of Western Australia, and later also a member of parliament. As a government surveyor, Forrest explored many areas of remote Western Australia, particularly the Kimberley region. Several of his expeditions were conducted alongside his brother, John Forrest, who became the first Premier of Western Australia. In later life, Forrest served in the unicameral Legislative Council from 1887 to 1890, representing the seat of Kimberley. Following the advent of responsible government, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly, representing the seat of West Kimberley from 1890 until his death. He was also mayor of Perth on two occasions, from 1892 to 1895 and from 1897 to 1900. Edward Keane (politician)
Edward Vivian Harvey Keane (8 August 1844 – 9 July 1904) was an Australian engineer, businessman, and politician. Born in Birkenhead, England, he was educated at Christ's Hospital, and emigrated to Melbourne, Victoria, in 1876. Keane then moved to South Australia, where he worked as a railway engineer. He later moved to Western Australia, where he served in both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council. Early life Keane was born on 8 August 1844 in Birkenhead, Cheshire. Edward Scott (Australian Politician)
Edward Scott (5 November 1852 – 24 May 1920) was an English-born politician in Western Australia. He became a member of the Legislative Council in 1886, then when representative self-government was achieved in 1890, won the seat of Perth in the new Legislative Assembly. He was also Mayor of Perth from 1889 until 1891. A doctor by profession, he lived in Western Australia from 1875 until 1899, marrying into one of the colony's leading families and becoming involved with the socially prestigious Western Australian Turf Club. Biography Scott was born in Axmouth, Devon, England, to John Scott, a gentleman farmer, and Anna Christiana Scott. He was educated at the nearby village of Chardstock, and then at St Thomas' Hospital in Lambeth, London, becoming a physician in 1873. Stephen Henry Parker
Sir Stephen Henry Parker (7 November 1846 – 13 December 1927) was a lawyer and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Western Australia from 1906 to 1914. Biography Early life Stephen Henry Parker was the second son of Stephen Stanley Parker (1817–1904) and his wife Elizabeth, née Sewell. He was the grandson of Stephen Parker (1879), a pioneer settler in York, Western Australia. Parker was educated at the Bishop's School, Perth, and was called to the bar in 1868. Career He became a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council and advocated responsible government for the colony. In 1878 he moved for the introduction of a bill to amend the constitution, but this motion was defeated. George Randell
George Randell (5 October 1830 – 2 June 1915) was an Australian businessman and politician. He served intermittently in the Parliament of Western Australia between 1875 and 1910, including as a minister in the government of Sir John Forrest. Born in England, Randell arrived in Western Australia in 1850, and subsequently gained prominence in Perth as a businessman. He was elected to the Perth City Council in 1870, and then to the colony's Legislative Council in 1875, where he served until 1878. He returned to the Legislative Council in 1880, as an appointee of the governor. In 1890, Randell won election to the seat of Moore in the newly created Legislative Assembly. He resigned in 1892 and was re-appointed to the Legislative Council the following year, but re-entered the Legislative Assembly at the 1894 election, winning the seat of Perth. George Glyde
George Glyde (1821 – 24 January 1898) was an early settler of Western Australia. He arrived in the colony as a child in 1830, and became a prominent merchant and businessman. Glyde was chairman of the Perth Town Council (the equivalent of mayor) from 1869 to 1873. He later served three terms as a nominated member of Legislative Council, from 1874 to 1879, from 1882 to 1885, and from 1892 to 1894. Early life and business career Glyde was born in Yeovil, Somerset, England, to Susannah (née Hallet) and William Glyde. He and his parents arrived in Western Australia in 1830, travelling aboard ''Rockingham'' (one of Thomas Peel's ships). They initially lived in Peel's settlement, Clarence, but that failed after a few years and they moved north to Fremantle and then to Perth. Julian Carr (Australian Politician)
Julian George Charles Carr (c. 1824–5 February 1886) was a Member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1868 to 1873. The son of William Carr, gentleman, Julian Carr was born in England around 1824. Nothing is known of his early life, but on 11 May 1846 he married Katherine Agnes Francisco, a cousin of Sir Walter James, at St. George's Church, Bloomsbury, Middlesex. At the time of his marriage, Carr was living in Museum Street in London, and described as a gentlemen. His marriage certificate lists his first name as Julienn. Carr and his wife emigrated to Western Australia, arriving in March 1848 on board the ''Orient''. Carr established himself as a merchant at Perth, and by 1849 was proprietor of the Freemason's Hotel there. The following year he was a director of the Geraldine Mining Company. Luke Leake
Sir Luke Samuel Leake (1828–1886), M.L.C., was a Speaker of the Western Australian Legislative Council. Biography Early life Luke Leake was born in 1828. He was the youngest son of Luke Leake, of Stoke Newington, Middlesex. Career He moved to Western Australia in 1833 (then known as the Swan River Colony), where he became a member of the Legislative Council, and was the first Speaker of that body, holding the position from 26 June 1872 until his death.
