A church, church building or church house is a building used for Christian worship services and other Christian religious activities. The earliest identified Christian church is a house church founded between 233 and 256. From the 11th through the 14th centuries, there was a wave of church construction in Western Europe. San Barnaba, Florence
The church of San Barnaba is a small Renaissance-style church in the center of Florence, at the corner of Via Panicale and Via Guelfa Description Initially built in the 14th century by the Chapter of St Lawrence, in memory of the June 11, 1289 victory at the Battle of Campaldino of the Guelphs from Florence over Ghibelline opponents from Arezzo. The poet, Dante Alighieri is said to have fought with the Guelph cavalry. After 1356, the church was affiliated with the Augustinian order, housed in an adjacent convent. In the 16th century, the complex was granted to a Carmelite order, and the underwent rebuilding of the church, including the elaborate gilded wooden ceiling, completed in 1717 by Giovanni Vernaccini. The convent was suppressed and converted into apartments. The church is part of the parish of San Lorenzo. San Lorenzo, Florence
The Basilica di San Lorenzo (Basilica of St. Lawrence) is one of the largest churches of Florence, Italy, situated at the centre of the main market district of the city, and it is the burial place of all the principal members of the Medici family from Cosimo il Vecchio to Cosimo III. It is one of several churches that claim to be the oldest in Florence, having been consecrated in 393 AD, at which time it stood outside the city walls. For three hundred years it was the city's cathedral, before the official seat of the bishop was transferred to Santa Reparata. San Lorenzo was the parish church of the Medici family. In 1419, Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici offered to finance a new church to replace an eleventh-century Romanesque rebuilding. The Evangelical Methodist Church of Florence is an Italian Methodist church located on via de' Benci #9 of Florence, region of Tuscany, Italy. The congregation occupies the former Roman Catholic church of ''San Jacopo tra i Fossi'', founded in the 12th century. It was originally staffed by Vallombrosian monks of San Salvi, but by 1543 it was transferred to the Augustinian order that had remained faithful to Cosimo I. The present church was rebuilt in the 17th century. The adjacent convent and church were suppressed in 1808. The church was allocated in 1874 to the Scottish missionary John R. MacDougall. As of 2013, the Methodist Church is currently cared for by the pastor of the Waldensian Church of Florence, and the Tuscany Methodist Circuit. San Giovannino Degli Scolopi
The church of San Giovannino degli Scolopi is a minor church in the center of Florence, located on Via Martelli corner with Via Gori. From 1351 to 1554, the church was known as ''San Giovanni Evangelista'', since the site had a small oratory dedicated to the saint. In the mid-16th century, Cosimo I applied the inheritance of a Giovanni di Lando of the neighboring Gori family to the erection of a church for the newly arrived Jesuits (1577). Construction began two years later on designs of Bartolommeo Ammannati, afterwards supplanted by Giulio Parigi and finally Alfonso Parigi il Giovane, who completed the work in 1661. The Jesuit Order was suppressed in 1775, and the church was passed to the Piarist or ''Scolopi'' Fathers. It was restored in 1843 by Leopoldo Pasqui. The ceiling was frescoed (1665) by Agostino Veracini and stucco statuary designed by Camillo Caetani. San Giovannino dei Cavalieri (''Young St. John the Baptist of the Knights'') previously named Church of San Giovanni Decollato (Decapitated St. John), is a parish church situated in Via San Gallo in central Florence, Italy. Initially the site held a 14th-century home for women of "easy virtue" and dedicated to St. Mary Magdalen, it was renamed after the patron saint of the Cavalieri or Knights of Malta. Rebuilt from 1553-1784, with facade added in 1699. San Gaetano, Florence
San Gaetano, also known as Santi Michele e Gaetano, is a Baroque church in Florence, Italy, located on the Piazza Antinori, entrusted to the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. History A Romanesque architecture, Romanesque church, dedicated solely to ''Saint Michael the Archangel'', had been located at the site for centuries prior to its Baroque reconstruction. Patronized by the Theatine order, the new church was dedicated to Saint Cajetan, one of the founders of the order, though the church could not formally be named after him until his canonisation in 1671. Funding for this reconstruction was obtained from the noble families in Florence, including the Medicis. Cardinal Carlo de' Medici was particularly concerned with the work, and his name is inscribed on the façade. Building took place between 1604 and 1648.
