Lipnik, Bielsko-Biała
Lipnik (german: Kunzendorf) is an osiedle (district) of Bielsko-Biała, Silesian Voivodeship, southern Poland. The osiedle has an area of 8.9317 km2 and on December 31, 2006, had 5,885 inhabitants. It is located in the east part of the city. Historically it was also subdivided into Lipnik Dolny (''lower'') and Lipnik Górny (''upper''). History The village was established in the late 13th century. It was first mentioned in 1326 in the register of Peter's Pence payment among Catholic parishes of Oświęcim deaconry of the Diocese of Kraków as ''Lipnik''. The name was of Slavic origin, derived from tilia trees (Polish: ''lipa''). Later the village was also known under German name of ''Kunzendorf'', as it was later a part of a German language island around Bielsko (German: ''Bielitz-Bialaer Sprachinsel''). Osiedle (Polish plural: ''osiedla'', from German ''Ansiedlung'' meaning ''settlement'') is a term used in Poland to denote a designated subdivision or neighbourhood of a city or its dzielnica, or of a town, with its own council and executive. Like the dzielnica and sołectwo, an osiedle is an auxiliary unit (''jednostka pomocnicza'') of a gmina. These units are created by decision of the gmina council, and do not have legal personality in their own right. In the case of an urban-rural gmina, it is also possible for a whole town to be designated an auxiliary unit. Not all Polish cities or towns have ''osiedla'' in the above sense.
