Lienz
Lienz (; Southern Bavarian: ''Lianz'') is a medieval town in the Austrian state of Tyrol. It is the administrative centre of the Lienz district, which covers all of East Tyrol. The municipality also includes the cadastral subdivision of ''Patriasdorf''. Geography Lienz is located at the confluence of the rivers Isel and Drava in the Eastern Alps, between the Hohe Tauern mountain range in the north (including the Schober and Kreuzeck groups), and the Gailtal Alps in the south. It is connected with Winklern in Carinthia by the Iselsberg Pass. The neighbouring municipality of Leisach marks the easternmost point of the Puster Valley. By the consistent growth of the city, some smaller villages around – though officially municipalities in their own right – are now widely considered to be suburbs of Lienz. The Bezirk Lienz ( it, Distretto di Lienz) is an administrative district (''Bezirk'') in Tyrol, Austria. It is the only district in East Tyrol. The district borders the Pinzgau ( Salzburg) in the north, the districts Spittal an der Drau and Hermagor (both Carinthia) in the east, Veneto ( Italy) in the south, and South Tyrol ( Italy) in the west. The area of the district is 2,016.41 km², with a population of 48,833 (January 1, 2019), and population a density of 25 persons per km². The administrative center of the district is Lienz. In 1918 it was occupied by the Italian Army. In 1919, Trentino and South Tyrol were split from what is now the Austrian state of Tyrol in the Treaty of Saint-Germain (these three entities made up the old Austro-Hungarian county of Tyrol). Isel River
The Isel () is a glacier-fed river in East Tyrol, Austria. The river flow varies with daily and seasonal temperature changes, and the riverbed is constantly shifting, creating a unique environment. The river's course runs along a geological fault running from NW to SE. It held a glacier during the last ice age, which has left boulders and gravel along the valley. There have been various proposals to dam and divert the water for use in generating hydroelectricity which have been opposed by environmentalists. Since 2015 the river has been designated a Natura 2000 site, which offers some protection. There is a hiking trail along the river, and it is known for excellent whitewater rafting conditions. The Puster Valley ( it, Val Pusteria ; german: Pustertal, ) is one of the largest longitudinal valleys in the Alps that runs in an east-west direction between Lienz in East Tyrol, Austria, and Mühlbach near Brixen in South Tyrol, Italy. East Tyrol
East Tyrol, occasionally East Tirol (german: Osttirol), is an exclave of the Austrian state of Tyrol, separated from the main North Tyrol part by the short common border of Salzburg and Italian South Tyrol (''Südtirol'', it, Alto Adige). Hohe Tauern
