Levittown is a census-designated place (CDP) and planned community in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Delaware Valley, Philadelphia metropolitan area. The population was 52,983 at the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census. It is above sea level. Though not a municipality, it is sometimes recognized as the largest suburb of Philadelphia (while Upper Darby Township, Lower Merion Township, Bensalem Township, Abington Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, Abington Township and Bristol Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Bristol Township are municipalities larger in size in the three surrounding Pennsylvania counties). Levittown is the name of several large suburban housing developments created in the United States (including one in Puerto Rico) by William J. Levitt and his company Levitt & Sons. Built after World War II for returning white veterans and their new families, the communities offered attractive alternatives to cramped central city locations and apartments. The Veterans Administration and the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) guaranteed builders that qualified veterans could buy housing for a fraction of rental costs. The first Levittown home sold for $7,900 and in a short period of time, 17,000 units were sold, providing homes for 84,000 people. In addition to normal family dwellings, Levittowns provided private meeting areas, swimming pools, public parks, and recreational facilities. Levittown is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York. It is located halfway between the villages of Hempstead and Farmingdale. As of the 2010 census, the CDP had a total population of 51,881, making it the most populous CDP in Nassau County and the second most populous CDP on Long Island, behind only Brentwood. Alfred Levitt
Alfred Levitt (August 15, 1894 - May 25, 2000), born Avraham Levitt in Starodub, Russia, was a painter and an expert on prehistoric art who migrated to the U.S. in 1911 and was made a Chevalier of the Order of the Arts and Letters by the government of France for his studies of paleolithic cave paintings. Levitt was an anarchist whose friends included radicals Emma Goldman and Jack London as well as artist Marcel Duchamp. Twenty of his works are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He was also a MacDowell Colony Fellow in 1956. William Levitt
William Jaird Levitt (February 11, 1907 – January 28, 1994) was an American real-estate developer and housing pioneer. As president of Levitt & Sons, he is widely credited as the father of modern American suburbia. He was named one of ''Time'' Magazine's " 100 Most Influential People of the 20th Century." Early life and education Levitt was born in 1907 to a Jewish family in Brooklyn. His generation was the second since emigrating from Russia and Austria; the paternal grandparents who immigrated to the United States had been a rabbi grandfather from Russia and a grandmother from Austria-Germany. His father was Abraham Levitt, a Brooklyn-born real estate attorney and part-time investor; his mother was Pauline Biederman. A younger brother, Alfred, was born when William was five years old.
