Lavonia, Georgia
Lavonia is a city in Franklin and Hart Counties, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,156 at the 2010 census, up from 1,827 at the 2000 census. Geography Lavonia is located in northeastern Franklin County at (34.436055, -83.106270). A small portion of the town extends southeast into Hart County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which , or 0.53%, is covered by water. The city lies along Interstate 85, southwest of Greenville, South Carolina, and northeast of Atlanta. History The Cherokee people were indigenous to the area in which Lavonia is located. A sophisticated tribe that typically dwelled in cabins by the 18th century, the Cherokee joined with the British during the American Revolution. When the American colonists prevailed, their land was issued as bounty land to those who had fought in the revolution. Georgia 403
Interstate 85 (I-85) is a major Interstate Highway that travels northeast–southwest in the US state of Georgia. It enters the state at the Alabama state line near West Point, and Lanett, Alabama, traveling through the Atlanta metropolitan area and to the South Carolina state line, where it crosses the Savannah River near Lake Hartwell. I-85 connects North Georgia with Montgomery, Alabama, to the southwest, and with South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia to the northeast. State Route 328 (SR 328) is an arc-shaped state highway in the northeast part of the U.S. state of Georgia. The route connects Avalon and Lavonia and provides access to Lake Hartwell and Tugaloo State Park. It is known as Gumlog Road for its entire length. It has been called Gumlog Road long before G-dot gave it a dreary number. Route description SR 328 begins at an intersection with new SR 17 in Avalon, in Stephens County, it intersects but does not cross the 4-lane SR 17 bypass. With the 4-laneing of SR 17, Gumlog Road was lowered 5 feet. This turned out to be a mistake causing a problem with the line of sight on the 4-lane. Gumlog Road, with over 2,000 vehicles per day, has been blocked-off with a concrete island in the median. Now, only right turns are allowed from Gumlog Road. State Route 77 (SR 77) is a state highway that travels south-to-north through portions of Hancock, Greene, Oglethorpe, Elbert, and Hart counties in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. Route description SR 77 begins at an intersection with SR 16, at a point northwest of Sparta, in Hancock County. It heads northeast to an intersection with SR 15. They head concurrent to the north-northwest, passing through rural areas of the county and cross into Greene County. They pass through White Plains and curve to the northwest to the town of Siloam.
