Lake Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for persons with the surname Lake, one in the Baronetage of Ireland and one in the Baronetage of Great Britain. As of 2014 one creation is extant. The Lake Baronetcy, of Carnow in the County of Wicklow, was created in the Baronetage of Ireland on 10 July 1661 for Edward Lake, Chancellor of the Diocese of Lincoln and Advocate-General of Ireland. The title became extinct on his death in 1674. The Lake Baronetcy, of Edmonton in the County of Middlesex, was created in the Baronetage of Great Britain on 17 October 1711 for Bibye Lake, Sub-Governor of the African Company. He was the great-nephew and heir of Sir Edward Lake of Carnow. For his services to Charles I, Sir Edward was given a warrant of a baronetcy in 1643 with a remainder to his heirs male, but the warrant was never sealed. Baronetage Of Ireland
Baronets are a rank in the British aristocracy. The current Baronetage of the United Kingdom has replaced the earlier but existing Baronetages of England, Nova Scotia, Ireland, and Great Britain. Baronetage of England (1611–1705) James I of England, King James I created the hereditary Order of Baronets in England on 22 May 1611, for the settlement of Ireland. He offered the dignity to 200 gentlemen of good birth, with a clear estate of Pound sterling, £1,000 a year, on condition that each one should pay a sum equivalent to three years' pay to 30 soldiers at 8d per day per man (total – £1,095) into the King's Exchequer. Baronetcies In The Baronetage Of Great Britain
A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century, however in its current usage was created by James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown.
