LGBT Rights In Samoa
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Samoa face legal challenges not faced by non-LGBT people. Same-sex sexual acts are illegal, punishable by up to seven years imprisonment, but the law is not enforced. Samoan society tends to be very tolerant of being transgender, but not of homosexuality. It has a large transgender or "third gender" community called '' fa'afafine''. Religion in Samoa encompasses a range of groups, but 98% of the population of Samoa is Christian. A relative, midwife, nurse or physician inspects the external genitalia when the baby is delivered and, in more than 99.95% of births, sex is assigned without ambiguity.
