Luray is a village in Clark County, Missouri, United States. As of the 2020 census, its population was 73. It is part of the Fort Madison– Keokuk, IA-MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Luray was platted in 1837. The source of the name Luray is obscure; according to the State Historical Society of Missouri, most likely it is Native American in origin. A post office called Luray has been in operation since 1841. After 170 years in operation, the Luray office closed on November 4, 2011. Luray Caverns
Luray Caverns, previously Luray Cave, is a show cave, cave just west of Luray, Virginia, United States, which has drawn many visitors since its discovery in 1878. The cavern system is adorned with speleothems such as columns, mud flows, stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, and mirrored pools. The caverns host the Great Stalacpipe Organ, a lithophone made from solenoid-fired strikers that tap stalactites of varied sizes to produce tones similar to those of xylophones, tuning forks, or bell (instrument), bells. A Smithsonian Institution report of July 13 and 14, 1880, concluded: "[I]t is safe to say that there is probably no other cave in the world more completely and profusely decorated with stalactite and stalagmite ornamentation than that of Luray."
