Lumpkin County is a County (United States), county in the Northeast Georgia, Northeast region of the U.S. state of Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population was 33,488. Its county seat is Dahlonega, Georgia, Dahlonega. Lumpkin County is included in the Atlanta metropolitan area, Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, Georgia metropolitan statistical area. History This area was settled by the Cherokee, who also occupied areas of what became delimited as southeastern Tennessee and western North Carolina. Lumpkin County was created on December 3, 1832. The county was named for Wilson Lumpkin, who at the time was Governor of Georgia. Lumpkin's daughter, Martha Wilson Lumpkin Compton, was the namesake of the town named Marthasville, Georgia, Marthasville, the early-1840s name for Atlanta in Fulton County; this was designated as the capital of the state after the Civil War. Dahlonega Mint
The Dahlonega Mint was a former Branch mint, branch of the United States Mint built during the Georgia Gold Rush to help the miners get their gold assayed and coining (mint), minted, without having to travel to the Philadelphia Mint. It was located at (34°31.8′N 83°59.2′W ) in Dahlonega, Lumpkin County, Georgia. Coins produced at the Dahlonega Mint bear the "D" mint mark. That mint mark is used today by the Denver Mint, which opened in 1906, over four decades after the Dahlonega Mint closed.
