Luis José Rueda Aparicio (born 3 March 1962) is a Catholic Church in Colombia, Colombian Catholic prelate who has served as Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bogotá, Archbishop of Bogotá since 2020. He was previously Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Popayán, Archbishop of Popayán from 2018 to 2020 and Roman Catholic Diocese of Montelíbano, Bishop of Montelíbano from 2012 to 2018. Pope Francis made him a Cardinal (Catholic Church), cardinal on 30 September 2023. Biography Luis José Rueda Aparicio was born in San Gil, Department of Santander, Santander, on 3 March 1962, the tenth of eleven siblings. Before deciding to become a priest he worked in construction alongside his father and managed a laboratory in a cement factory. A cardinal is a senior member of the clergy of the Catholic Church. As titular members of the clergy of the Diocese of Rome, they serve as advisors to the pope, who is the bishop of Rome and the visible head of the worldwide Catholic Church. Cardinals are chosen and formally created by the pope, and typically hold the title for life. Collectively, they constitute the College of Cardinals. The most solemn responsibility of the cardinals is to elect a new pope in a conclave, almost always from among themselves, with a few historical exceptions, when the Holy See is vacant.
