Lourenço Da Silva De Mendouça
Lourenço da Silva Mendouça was a member of the royal family of the Kingdom of Ndongo in what is now Angola. An abolitionist, he was probably the first person to successfully convince authorities to end slavery in Europe. A Catholic, his dealings were mostly with Church authorities and those with whom they were associated. Agostinho Lourenço da Conceição Pereira (5 September 1886 – 2 August 1964) was a Portuguese soldier, best known for founding and running the Portuguese political police under the '' Estado Novo''. Lourenço fought in World War I for the British. After the war, he acted briefly as governor of Leiria. He was made Commander of the Royal Victorian Order for services to the future Edward VIII, then Prince of Wales, who was visiting Lisbon in 1931. Lourenço is a town and district in the Brazilian municipality of Calçoene, in the interior of the state of Amapá. The main economic activities of the town is gold mining. It is one of the oldest mines in Brazil. History Gold mining in Lourenço began in the 19th century. In 1894, at the height of the gold rush, there were 6,000 to 10,000 gold miners in the area around the Calçoene River. In 1984, Mineração Novo Astro (MNA) and Mineração Yukio Yoshidome (MYYSA) were awarded concessions for mining on an industrial scale.
