Louis-Trefflé Dorais
Louis-Trefflé Dorais (March 19, 1835 – January 2, 1907) was a merchant and political figure in Quebec. He represented Nicolet in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1883 to 1888 as an independent conservative. He was born in Sainte-Martine, Lower Canada, the son of Léon Dorais and Félicité Lamagdelaine, and was educated there. He was an exporter and dealer in hay. In 1856, he married Marie-Louise-Elmire Poisson. Dorais was postmaster at Warwick. In 1872, he moved to Saint-Grégoire. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Quebec assembly in 1881, losing to Charles-Édouard Houde. After the election of Houde was overturned in 1883, Dorais defeated Houde in the by-election that followed. His election in 1886 was overturned by the Quebec Superior Court in 1888; he did not run in the by-election which followed. Louis-Edmond Panneton
Louis-Edmond Panneton (July 6, 1848 – August 5, 1935) was a lawyer, judge, educator and political figure in Quebec. He represented Sherbrooke in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1892 to 1900 as a Conservative. He was born in Trois-Rivières, Canada East, the son of André Panneton and Marie Blondin, and was educated at the Séminaire de Trois-Rivières. Panneton was admitted to the Quebec bar in 1870 and set up practice in Sherbrooke. In 1886, he married Corinne, the daughter of Louis-Trefflé Dorais. He was mayor of Sherbrooke in 1888. In 1899, Panneton was named Queen's Counsel. He was defeated in 1900 when he ran for reelection to the Quebec assembly and returned to his law practice. Panneton also taught law at Bishop's College. In 1912, he was named to the Quebec Superior Court for Montreal district. Warwick, Quebec
Warwick is a small town north east of Montreal, located in Arthabaska Regional County Municipality, Arthabaska county, Quebec, Canada. The town was incorporated in 1861 and named after Warwick, the town of the same name in England. Up until 2014 the town hosted Quebec's annual summer cheese festival, which showcases many of the locally produced artisanal cheeses. In 2014 the festival was moved to Victoriaville. Warwick also claims to be one of the possible birthplaces of poutine (fries with gravy and cheese curds). Nicolet (provincial Electoral District)
Nicolet () was a provincial electoral district in the Montérégie region of Quebec, Canada. It was created for the 1867 election (and an electoral district of that name existed earlier in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada and the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada). It disappeared in the 1973 election and its successor electoral district was Nicolet-Yamaska. Nicolet-Yamaska, in turn, disappeared in the 1981 election and Nicolet reappeared. However, Nicolet's final election was in 1985. It disappeared for good in the 1989 election and its successor electoral district was the re-created Nicolet-Yamaska. It was named in honour of French explorer Jean Nicolet who also worked for the Company of One Hundred Associates in the 17th century. Lower Canada
The Province of Lower Canada () was a British colonization of the Americas, British colony on the lower Saint Lawrence River and the shores of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence established in 1791 and abolished in 1841. Sainte-Martine, Quebec
Sainte-Martine () is a municipality in Beauharnois-Salaberry Regional County Municipality in the Montérégie region of Quebec, Canada. The population as of the 2021 Canadian census was 5,664. The municipality is made up of a large northern section and a small unattached southern area that was known as the municipality of Saint-Paul-de-Châteauguay until its merger with Sainte-Martine on September 9, 1999. History Sainte-Martine is named in honor of Martina of Rome, martyred in 226. Being already settled and recognize as Sainte-Martine for many years, the status of the municipality was officialized on July 1, 1855, as the parish municipality of Sainte-Martine. The municipality lost a section of its territory in 1885 for the creation of the parish of Très-Saint-Sacrement. It also lost a sizeable part in 1937 when Saint-Paul-de-Châteauguay split from Saint-Martine to become its own municipality, but it was eventually reattached to Sainte-Martine in 1999.
