Lorne Loomer
Lorne Kenneth Loomer (March 11, 1937 – January 1, 2017) was a Canadian competition rower and Olympic champion. He received a gold medal in ''coxless fours'' at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, together with Archibald MacKinnon, Walter D'Hondt and Donald Arnold. At the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, Loomer received a gold medal in ''eights''. Awards Loomer was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1958. He was inducted into ''British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame'' in 1966, and into ''University of British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame'' in 1993, together with the other members of the Olympic gold team. The Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame inducted Loomer in 1994. Rowing, often called crew American English, in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using Oar (sport rowing), oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars (called blades in the United Kingdom) are attached to the boat using Rowlock, rowlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower (or oarsman) holds two oars, one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain (rowing), coxswain, called eight (rowing), eights. David Anderson (British Columbia Politician)
David A. Anderson, (born August 16, 1937) is a former Canadian cabinet minister. Early life Anderson was born in Victoria, British Columbia. He was educated at Victoria College, Aiglon College and at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Law; he graduated in 1962 with a LLB. During his UBC days Anderson won a silver medal for rowing in the 1960 Olympic Games, and a silver medal in the Pan American Games in Chicago in 1959. He was also a pilot in the University Reserve of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Career Civil servant Anderson served as a foreign service officer in the Department of External Affairs between 1962 and 1968. Rowing is the act of propelling a human-powered watercraft using the sweeping motions of oars to displace water and generate reactional propulsion.
