Loftus, New South Wales
Loftus is a suburb, in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Loftus is 29 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district, in the Local government in Australia, local government area of the Sutherland Shire. History Loftus was named after Lord Augustus Loftus, Lord Augustus William Frederick Spencer Loftus, governor of New South Wales between 1878 and 1885. The Illawarra railway line to Sutherland was completed in 1885. The next station south was Loftus Junction, which opened on 9 March 1886. The name was changed to Loftus ten years later and in 1979 the station moved to the present site. The Sydney Tramway Museum at Loftus (a non-profit community organisation run entirely by volunteers) was created in 1950, in a large tram yard shed beside the rail tracks that ran across the Princes Highway into the Royal National Park. U-Go Mobility is a bus company in Sydney, Australia, that operates services in Region 10, which serves South Western Sydney, and Sutherland Shire. It is a 50:50 joint venture between UGL and Go-Ahead Group. History On 22 December 2022, U-Go Mobility was awarded a seven-year, $500 million contract to operate bus services region 10 in the Canterbury-Bankstown, Georges River and Sutherland Shire regions. The enlarged region 10 incorporates the services of region 5 formerly operated by Punchbowl Bus Company and region 10 services formerly operated by Transdev NSW. It commenced operations on 1 July 2023. Within the first month since commencing operations, the on-time running of services was severely hampered compared to the two previous operators. Sydney Trains is the brand name and operator of Railways in Sydney, suburban and intercity train services in and around Greater Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. Loftus Railway Station, Sydney
Loftus railway station is located on the Illawarra line, serving the Sydney suburb of Loftus. It is served by Sydney Trains' T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line services and limited NSW TrainLink South Coast Line services. History Loftus station opened on 9 March 1886 as Loftus Junction when the Illawarra line was extended from Sutherland to Waterfall. In September 1896 it was renamed Loftus. It was rebuilt in 1979 as part of the extension of the electrification from Loftus Junction to Waterfall. From 1886 until 1991, Loftus was the former junction of the branch line to the Royal National Park which branched off immediately south of the station. Princes Highway is a major road in Australia, extending from Sydney via Melbourne to Adelaide through the states of New South Wales, Victoria (Australia), Victoria and South Australia. Loftus Junction Railway Signal Box
The Loftus Junction railway signal box is a heritage-listed disused railway signal box on the Illawarra line at Loftus in the Sutherland Shire local government area of New South Wales, Australia. It was built during 1886. The property is owned by RailCorp, an agency of Government of New South Wales. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History The Illawarra line was opened from Sutherland to Waterfall in 1886, being constructed by William Rowe and W. Smith. Sydney Tramway Museum
The Sydney Tramway Museum, operated by the South Pacific Electric Railway Co-operative Society, is Australia's oldest tramway museum and the largest in the southern hemisphere. It is located at Loftus in the southern suburbs of Sydney. History Construction of the museum at its original site on the edge of the Royal National Park commenced in August 1956. It was officially opened in March 1965 by NSW Deputy Premier Pat Hills. The facilities were basic, initially a four-track shed built with second hand materials and approximately 800 metres of running track. In 1975, the Government of New South Wales approved the museum moving to a new site across the Princes Highway adjacent to Loftus railway station.
