The name was derived from Lockyer Creek, which was probably named by Allan Cunningham in July 1829, after Major Edmund Lockyer. Lockyer is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The district consists primarily of Gatton and Laidley Shires and northern parts of Beaudesert Shire. It includes the major town of Gatton and a number of smaller centres including Laidley, Helidon and Withcott. The eastern parts of the district are part of the outer southern suburbs of Ipswich and Brisbane in the area of Greenmount. The district is bounded on the west by Toowoomba North, and Toowoomba South. On the southwest and south by Condamine, Southern Downs and Beaudesert. To the north and northwest by Nanango. The Lockyer Creek is a creek located in South East Queensland, Australia. A tributary of the Brisbane River, the creek is a major drainage system in the Lockyer Valley. Rising on the eastern slopes of the Great Dividing Range, the creek flows generally north-easterly for more than before it reaches its confluence with the Brisbane River north-northeast of , and downstream from the Wivenhoe Dam. The creek is named after Edmund Lockyer. Geography The town is on the Brisbane River, west of the state capital, Brisbane, and north of Ipswich. Due to its proximity to Brisbane and Ipswich, Lowood is becoming an area for hobby farmers and residential commuters. History Lowood railway station () was established as the first terminus of the Brisbane Valley branch railway in 1884 and the town grew from the subdivision around the new railway station. Lake Clarendon is a rural locality in the Lockyer Valley Region, Queensland, Australia. In the Lake Clarendon had a population of 288 people. Geography The locality takes its name from the lake created by the Lake Clarendon Dam (). Lockyer Creek forms the southern boundary of the locality. History Clarendon Provisional School opened on circa 1882. In 1903 it was renamed Springdale Provisional School. It became Springdale State School on 1 January 1909, but closed later in 1909. Its precise location is not known but it was in the vicinity of the intersection of (present day) Adare, Lake Clarendon and Spring Creek. Lake Clarendon State School opened on 9 June 1902. Lake Clarendon State School is a heritage-listed state school at 35 Lake Clarendon Road, Lake Clarendon, Lockyer Valley Region, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1901 to 1902 by Patrick Fagan. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 12 June 2015. History Lake Clarendon State School, located about northeast of Gatton, opened in 1902. The timber school residence and teaching building were erected in 1901-2 (the latter was extended in the late 1970s), and a playshed was added in 1906. Edmund Lockyer
Edmund Lockyer, (21 January 1784 – 10 June 1860) was a British soldier and explorer of Australia. Born in Plymouth, Devon, Lockyer was the son of Thomas Lockyer, a sailmaker, and his wife Ann. Lockyer began his army career as an ensign in the 19th Regiment in June 1803, was promoted lieutenant in early 1805 and made captain in August 1805. Lockyer was promoted to major in August 1819 and in August 1824 transferred to the 57th Regiment. Lockyer arrived at Sydney, capital of the British Colony of New South Wales, aboard the ''Royal Charlotte'' in April 1825 with men from the 57th; also with his wife and ten children. In August 1825, Lockyer was instructed by Governor Sir Thomas Brisbane to lead an expedition to explore the upper reaches of the Brisbane River. Allan Cunningham (botanist)
Allan Cunningham (13 July 1791 – 27 June 1839) was an English botanist and explorer, primarily known for his travels in Australia to collect plants. Early life Cunningham was born in Wimbledon, Surrey, England, the son of Allan Cunningham (head gardener at Wimbledon Park House), who came from Renfrewshire, Scotland, and his English wife Sarah (née Juson/Jewson née Dicken). Allan Cunningham was educated at a Putney private school, Reverend John Adams Academy and then went into a solicitor's office (a Lincoln's Inn Conveyancer). He afterwards obtained a position with William Townsend Aiton superintendent of Kew Gardens, and this brought him in touch with Robert Brown and Sir Joseph Banks.
