Livingston County ( ) is a Counties of the United States, county in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, its population was 193,866. It is part of the Detroit-Warren, Michigan, Warren-Dearborn, Michigan, Dearborn, MI Metro Detroit, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat and most populous city is Howell, Michigan, Howell. The county was platted in 1833, but for three years remained assigned to Shiawassee County, Michigan, Shiawassee and Washtenaw County, Michigan, Washtenaw Counties for revenue, taxation, and judicial matters. It was formally organized in 1836. Livingston County Courthouse (Michigan)
The Livingston County Courthouse is a government building located at 200 East Grand River Avenue in Howell, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. History The first European settlers in what is now Livingston County, Michigan arrived in the 1820s. However, the population grew rapidly, and in 1833 Livingston County was created, and its government was organized in 1836. The two-year-old village of Howell was chosen as the county seat, due to its central location. However, many county residents protested the designation, and the county had to rent rooms to use as offices. It was not until 1847 that the first county courthouse was constructed. This building served until 1874, when it was replaced. By the early 1880s county officials realized that the new 1874 courthouse was too small for the county's needs. M-59 is an east–west state trunkline highway that crosses the northern part of Metropolitan Detroit in the US state of Michigan. It runs between Howell at Interstate 96 (I-96) and I-94 on the Chesterfield– Harrison township line near the Selfridge Air National Guard Base. While primarily a multi-lane surface highway, it is a full freeway from just east of downtown Pontiac near Opdyke Road to just east of the Mound Road/Merrill Road exit in Utica. The various surface highway segments are named either Highland Road, Huron Street or Hall Road, with the latter known as an area for shopping and dining.
