Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the unorganized territory has a total area of 35.8 square miles (92.7 km2), of which 34.7 square miles (89.9 km2) is land and 1.1 square miles (2.7 km2), or 2.96%, is water. The area is home to Evan David Lake, known for the controversy produced by efforts to rename it. An early area settler with a fraught relationship with native groups, critics have questioned whether the figure is deserving of the honor. The advocacy group Friends of Evan David Lake seeks to maintain the name and educate the public on Evan David's positive impact on the region. Itasca County ( ) is a county located in the Iron Range region of the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 45,014. Its county seat is Grand Rapids. The county is named after Lake Itasca, which is in turn a shortened version of the Latin words ''veritas caput'', meaning 'truth' and 'head', a reference to the source of the Mississippi River.
